Have you ever heard the expression, “Timing is Everything?”. If you work in the financial sector you have probably heard this saying more than once. The right decision at the exact right time can be the difference between a huge gain and a colossal loss. No one knows this fact better than Warren Buffett.

Part 2- Timing Is Everything

“I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when other are fearful”

  • Warren Buffett

Try to really take in these words, they are very powerful, aren’t they? I find it to be one of the best possible advice in economics. If you know the markets, and know the nature of how it moves, you can definitely use this knowledge to your favor.

I can give you one good example of a person I know who has really good timing when it comes to investing. Is it a coincidence? I am sure it is not, because he tends to get it right almost all the time.

It was 2005 January 8th and Sweden was struck by the biggest storm in modern history. The storm hit hard in the south part of Sweden and turned much of the thick forest into fields of fallen timber. It was estimated that more than 250 million trees fell during this storm. It is estimated that if all timber was stacked in a row it would be able to reach the same distance as going to the moon and back 5 trips.

The devastation to the landowners was very grave. I remember my grandparents land where they lost around 30 percent of the forest. Still this was very little compared to many others. In Sweden many farmers completely live off their land and the money they get from selling the timber yearly. The sudden build up of the biggest timber stock pile on earth had led to the plummeting of prices for timber. The landowners had no choice but to sell as the timber would go bad if it was left the way it was. A Generation of wealth was lost for many, and there were even some farmers who went to their barns and hung themselves as they knew it would take forever before the forest would grow back.

This was a time when the last thing on peoples mind was to invest in forest, as it turned out that one could loose it over night to a freak storm. But my friend, thought the complete opposite. He said that this is a freak accident happens once in a century. Looking at the past, forest has always been stable long term. Said and done he bought quite a bit of land, that was now considered worthless without the forest growing on top of it. He planted new trees as soon as all timber was removed.

25 years ago seemed like a lifetime away when my friend bought this land and intended to plant pine trees on it to harvest later. Today there is already a small forest growing on his land, and the trees are more than half way to be fully grown and to be ready to harvest.
Markets go up and down, there are patterns, once we figure out the patterns we should not let emotions make our decisions. I think the key is to rationally analyze the situation. Because if you are acting on emotions you might not be acting according to logic, also most time if we act on emotion we usually are affected by others opinion.

The market place can be cruel, it does not care about our emotions. Ones man's misery can become another man's fortune, therefore the best time to invest may not be when your taxi driver gives you financial investment advice, but when no one want to touch a certain part of the market.

There are always many opportunities, providing you find them and get on them at the right time. Steemit I find is one where starting early allows you to grow and will continue forward as Steem price goes up as does your follower and post count.

Shocking how much of that forest though was taken out and whoa at how many logs there are in the pics!

It was astounding how many trees fell. It was weird because Ifs not common with cyclones in Sweden, atleast not this powerful. Maybe it's the climate acting up ?

Steemit is definitely still at an early stage and a perfect time to join, I definitely agree with you on that. Also I think it might become the investment of a lifetime !

The climate changing constantly is messing up a lot of things. My state South Australia is having a lot of days going from raining, to sunny, to cloudy etc no matter the season, these days anyway.

Steemit is a worth while investment and i am putting a lot of time and work into it, with much more to come!

Yea Australia has had a lot of natural catastrophes lately with both draught and floods. It's crazy the effect it has and I guess things might get even worse from here.

Anyways, better to be positive I guess. Hopefully clean energy will speed up and things will change for the better !

Now is the time to really put in a lot of work into Steemit for sure, I am also trying to put in as much time as I can, without getting my wife angry ;)

Clean energy and a big change in the world will definitely help set things right. Always got to keep positive with everything in life though and work hard on yourself and making sure all is good and a happy life is what you live.

Haha nah, are you even a good husband if you don't make the missus angry? ;)

You Said that right! In China there is a saying; " 男人不坏女人不爱” which basically translates if men aren't mean women won't love them . A motto I try to live by ;) j/k

Haha nice guys finish last unfortunately :P

Wow you made me think of a good topic for a future post 💡

Very serious advice, and the story about the timber was a perfect accompaniment. Those photos seem unreal too, the one with the stack of logs and the tiny guy in front, I can't even wrap my head on the scale of this event. On the note of Buffett's rule, it's not always that easy, the housing bubble in the U.S. was an easy guess, but few had the actual capital to, well... capitalize. We just gotta keep on the offensive and try to apply it as much as we can.

Thanks a lot for your comment. You mention something interesting, when there is a crisis most don't have the money to capitalize. I have been thinking about that and have been saving up specifically to invest during the next crisis, I think it's about preparation, and to not forget the past. Economic crisis comes almost each decade. I think we are close to one now, what do you think ?

I believe that history will repeat itself over and over, both naturally and man-made. Saving up for economic crisis is a solid plan, and while I'm not sure about the rest of the world, the U.S. seems to be headed toward something big yet again. I remember reading about the massive amount of defaults on cars, and houses are over inflated again, hurricanes have also created massive devastation in Texas and Florida as well as off the coast islands. I guess it depends on the money you have and the amount you are willing to risk, with maybe some ethics sprinkled in. Buffett's rule is something one has to be constantly aware of, from making a couple dollars off a $100 bitcoin investment on some upswings, to buying up defaulted cars and selling them to hurricane victims with trades and flips and whatnot; some portion of the rule also applies to simply protecting oneself from attacks just by knowing they exist and what they could be, such as the car thing. I mean, I don't really know and I'm not an expert, I'm just trying to stay on the offensive and do more than just stay afloat. Big picture such as clean energy is good to keep track of but curse those lambos and studio apps, I need some capital for that.

those who get rich get richer and vice versa, it's definitely hard to break this cycle.

I see the same picture as you, America is even more in debt than in 2008, and the problem hasn't been solved, just more money has been produced. Now they are stuck because there is no real growth, not even with the zero interest rates. Fiat currencies never survive for very long because the longer the time goes the closer it gets to its real value = zero

That's really crazy about the farmers hanging themselves after they lost their trees. IT really sucks. I had a Sweedish gf in Canada long ago from Umea, way up north and they lived off the land. Sweeden is really compelling in this regard. I considered moving there once, not for her, but because its a cool country and I love snow.

If you do move there I promise to invite you for some good beer and a nice party ! I'm planning to get a nice house in the country side in the future. Swedish nature is pretty nice and we have a rule called Allemansrätt " the freedom to roam" Its the right to Access most public or privately owned land for recreation and sports. The Way it's supposed to be if you ask me

Your friend is a very very clever guy. Although you never can't know an forecast the weather and climatic changes, chances are that the next 30 or so years a bad thing like this storm won't happen again. So buying the land as long as it is cheap is really a wise decision!

The hardest decisions are many times the most profitable ones. There is of course always risk. But if rationally examining the situation the risks can be controlled. Also, I think the longer time goal you have the lesser risk. Making a fast buck though is always very risky as the short term is much harder to predict then the long term. Thanks for your comment my friend :)

Yeah, that's true. Therefore often you can earn more... or lose all. Long term investements are much more calculatable and thus less risky.
You are welcome buddy, it's always a pleasure to read your posts!
