Full credits to Theresa May government, within weeks of Windrush generation scandal several of the affected people received their British citizenship. This is the power of Social Media, this could be the power of Steem and why it is so important to maintain a platform that open and censorship-resistant that can rally after causes and keep pressure on policy makers to do the right thing. This is probably the quickest I have seen a government move on a matter, and it certainly was the right thing to do.
I was personally moved by the matter as I know it could have been my mother or father or granny or grandpa in that same boat. Most importantly it was my Caribbean brothers and sisters so I took to Social media to bring about the awareness and put off other blogs to dedicate some time towards this. It certainly a good ending for some of these folks, I am please that the government has setup a task force specifically to deal with the matter at no cost to these people.
We have to some empathy and love to those who find themselves in difficult position especially when it matters outside of their control. Our society is very much connected, some of these policies have rippling effect and only when it hits home we understand the consequences. As an example, many of these same individuals would send money home to their love ones, whether it is a 10 or 20 pounds, it goes a long way. Growing up in the Caribbean I can testify to it, especially during the Christmas time or New Years. Its the "Tanty" and "Uncle" that sends a little change (money) as islanders would say that lifts the Christmas or New Year. Remittances are a very very very big part of all Caribbean islands economies. To those who say what does Britain get out of it, I always tell these folks study your history. The Caribbean was a financial power house for the United Kingdom. Like Oil today is a big market for the Middle East, so to was Sugar , Cotton and Banana was a big market for the United Kingdom. Sadly enough, our same politicians f... it up and Caribbean lost all its protection to European market effectively leaving these islands to depend on Tourism. Anyway sorry for the history rant but I hope you get the point, policy makers have to be extremely mindful of several factors and there comes a point even when these agenda group make up a large support of your base you remind them of this history that got them to that point.
To the far-right and far-left, I know immigration is a big part of your agenda but please leave the Caribbean folks out of it. While many may say Africa is the motherland, England and European countries are indeed the mother countries of many of these islands. Some of these islands are still subjects and very much part of the wider Kingdom. One Love to the British government and the Caribbean, it is very much in your interest now that the Caribbean and by extension the Commonwealth becomes key areas of investments if or when Brexit plays out. In reality it would never replace the trade benefits of a European market but history would show it has the potential to fill the vacuum left post-brexit. In typical Caribbean style, let end this with the song by Bob Marley
Thank god something is happening at least. This whole story just stinks to the bottom and would affect so many innocent lives, made behind some desk somewhere
