The trick is to make the decisions LONG before they are needed to be executed on. I learned that from playing a lot of poker before Black Friday. I would decide before the person acted what I would do. If they checked I would "x", if they raised a little I would "y", etc. Then when the time came for me to put in all my chips the decision would be a bit easier. I made it before my heart started racing, etc.
With #covid19 my family had a meeting a few weeks ago to decide what we were going to do and when. We would starting stocking the non-perishables that we normally eat, get an extra bag of beans etc. Once there was a case in Canada we would cancel all un-necessary appointments, and finally when it was inevidable that it was going to reach our city we would start self isolating.
When the time came last week, we were ready and it was an easy decision. The emotion was figured out long ago. The act of telling our family to stay home, to call our parents and educate and encourage them to do the right thing was hard, but the decision to do it was easy.
Its much easier to keep level headed when the decisions are made on strong values and you stick to your values.

It sounds harsh but in situations like this, you have to, to the best of your ability, leave the heart out of the equation. Of course why we all want to keep everyone safe, is because we care about people, but to excel in that, actions needed have to be very calculated.
Emotion and mass hysteria makes you buy toilet paper in bulk, calculation makes you understand that it's not necessary for your survival, not the tiniest bit.
Sounds like you and your family have done it right. We discussed the matter last Tuesday (Finland started shutting down only this Monday) with the family and it was decided that me and my sister would not be visiting countryside homehome for a while.

Its hard, but the best decision.
It took a lot of convincing to my mom, dad and only living grandparent, that this is serious and they need to go home. They live in a very rural area and if one house gets sick there is no one to help the other. My grandparent is 85 and has lived on their own since their second spouse past (15yrs ago). Still strong and driving, but this bug is scary.
