Content Warning: Death, Pain, Fetal Positions.

Hey there Rebel,

The next Underrealm book is HERE.

Weremage, the fifth book in the Nightblade Epic (and the eighth Underrealm book in all) is available on Amazon for your fresh little viewing holes.

Now I'm supposed to tell you a little something about the book. And as per usual with my books—especially the Underrealm books—what I have to say is going to COMPLETELY turn some of you off.

And that's okay. Because the rest of you will be like, "Ooh, dang, that sounds great!"

It's been a little less than a year since Shadeborn, the last book in the series, came out. But only a few days have passed in the story, since the High King's Seat was …

… well, spoilers in case you haven't read Shadeborn. But if you have, you know.

Shadeborn was the moment I felt fully comfortable adding "epic" to my "fantasy." The scope of the story has grown huge (while hopefully still remaining personal). And that only continues here.

Loren is no longer a simple girl from the forest. Her decisions have consequences. And she walks in higher circles than she ever could have dreamed in the Birchwood.

Now she's been entrusted with a task—almost a holy mission—that might be beyond her. She'll have to shoulder greater responsibility than anything she's known thus far.

But dark dreams have begun to plague her. The farther she rides down this new road, the worse the dreams become. And with the dreams have come a sense—a feeling—of a lurking, watching presence just over her shoulder.

Now if you're ready to start reading, here's the link to get Weremage.

But I do want to say one last thing before you begin—it's a tiny spoiler, but it's a warning as well, because there are some people who should NOT read this book all the way through.

(If you want NO SPOILERS whatsoever, skip to the heading that says "SPOILERS OVER.")

AND NOW, A (SLIGHT) SPOILER

This email's subject line says "Content Warning."

That's not a joke. It's not some catchy phrase designed to entice you in just to see what the heck I'm talking about.

This book will be hard for some of you to read. Maybe even unhealthy.

If you've been with me for a while, you know I have some gripes with modern fantasy. In particular you know I don't like how "titillating" they seem to find certain subjects—like gender discrimination, patriarchy and sexual assault.

"Oh, aren't we so BRAVE for putting women in their place! Boy, no one in today's world would dare to do anything so RISQUE!"

... sigh ...

But my problem isn't THAT they deal with these subjects. It's HOW they deal with these subjects. And I've always promised myself I wouldn't shy away from any subject matter if I thought it was necessary to my story—and, in particular, if I thought I could flip expectations on their head.

Part of my mission statement as an author is to show mainstream fantasy how NOT to be utterly insensitive, gross dudebros when they're dealing with with this sort of subject matter.

I don't think this is "brave" or "daring." I'm just trying to learn from critiques of people who have done it stunningly, terribly, hideously WRONG, and trying to do it RIGHT instead.

That being said—I know you still might not want to read it. And if that's the case, you're probably going to want to just skim Chapter 43, or avoid it entirely.

I'm letting you know because I don't ever want my books to cause you like, actual harm.

(Though I'm totally fine with breaking your heart every once in a while).

SPOILERS OVER

And so with all of that being said, I hope you enjoy the book. (CLICK HERE if you haven't already picked it up).

And if you don't exactly enjoy it—what with all the stuff that happen within its pages—just remember that it's always darkest before the dawn, every cloud has a silver lining, and eventually the entire universe will be consumed in a heat-death so complete that no memory of humanity will remain.

YAY!

Best Wishes,
Garrett

P.S. Oh, you're still here? Awesome!

As you might imagine, I'm a pretty big fan of stories and storytelling.

Turns out, I might be a pretty rare specimen in that respect? I guess? I don't know. But it's made me pretty sad.

This has become confusing. Click here for a much better explanation of what the heck I'm talking about.

Best,
Garrett
