Unusual Clouds Over the UK?

in blog •  7 years ago

As some of you may know the weather has been behaving erratically as of late. Devastating fires, earthquake, hurricanes, snow, etc. For those of you who have been following this phenomenon here's another to add to the list...

Helm Wind Set to Hit UK

The strong north-easterly wind is the only named weather of its kind in the UK, and produces unusually shaped cloud formations.

According to the Met Office, the wind will blow at a constant speed and direction through a layer of stable air perpendicular to the ridge or peak of hills and mountains, creating something called a lee wave.

The air is squeezed as it passes over the high ground and descends briefly downwind of the hill.

It's set to hit the south west slopes of Cross Fell in Cumbria.

According to The Mirror , the Met Office said: "Because the air is stable, it tries to re-establish itself by rising again and this causes a waveform. Where the wave crests you can end up with clouds."
