Dogs and fireworks (i'm not going out for New Years)

in blog •  5 years ago

To anyone that lives over here this is probably pretty obvious.

To anyone that lives anywhere and care about their dogs I'd imagine the the same story is true.

Dogs are really scared of fireworks and well, we are upon that time of year now aren't we.

In the west we have certain regulations against when people can send explosives to the sky but here over in Thailand and the other countries in this area I think that people are pretty much allowed to do them whenever the fuck the want to.

Therefore, my new years is spent in my house.... with my dog.

I don't really care if this is frowned upon but my dog.... like most other dogs, is absolutely terrified of fireworks.

When I am not at home and she is subjected to fireworks on her own i will find her in the upstairs bathroom in a corner shaking in fear when i come home and well..... i simply can't walk away from that and be ok with it.

So everyone out there that ends up having a big holiday of celebration for the new year know that I do NOT look down upon you but I will not be joining you. I suppose i just worry about my doge-pal perhaps a bit too much.

I would much rather be at home with her, having her curl up even closer to me than usual, than to be out while i know that she is absolutely terrified the entire time.

I would much rather skip the booze that I already get in my system pretty much every day than to not be at home the one day where my dog needs me the most. Maybe i baby her a bit too much.... i dunno. I don't think i could have fun knowing that she was shaking in a corner terrified of something when the one thing that could make her feel better (me) was not there.

Dogs hate new years..... if you have a dog, keep that in mind. I'll be at home with mine during the 2019-2020 transition... for sure.

Dear friend I could cry ! I have two big furries being so scared for 5 days now , peeing in the house and shaking all over all day. It’s so hard to watch. I have to take the car and drive deep into the fields to get them to go and do their number 3 I het fireworks and the state they bring the animals in ! Here it’s Monday 16.00 so 32 hours and all we will back to normal for another 360 days than All will be hell again
For now happy new year to you and see you in phc soon

they are shooting off fireworks where you are for 5 days? yikes. I don't think I would like that even if i didn't have a dog.

In Michigan they just recently opened us up to some of the higher grade of fireworks. Due to that, we had all kinds of idiots lighting different things off all the time. Now they have restrictions in place to major national holidays, the day before and the day after. It helps a bit, but you still have people that go crazy. Our dog gets pretty scared as well. We bought her a thundershirt a long time ago hoping that would help, but it really doesn't. Now we just stay home with her or make sure we take her with us camping on the 4th. As long as no one in our neighborhood lights them off the sound from the big shows is pretty muffled. We don't crate her when we are away so she can always go down in the basement and avoid some of the noise. I totally understand and agree with your thinking about New Years!

New year, July 4th, fireworks days were always nightmare for me and Tinkerbell too...
We used to go to a quiet hotel or something and stayed away from all the noises.

I don't blame you and people are thoughtless when they do fire works in residential neighborhoods. I have nothing against fireworks but at last do it away from animals. The SPCA animal shelter will be flooded with stray dogs for the next few days and only a few will be claimed by their owners. Luckily my two dogs actually don't get spooked by the bangs but my last two did.

there must be something about the tone of the fireworks because some of the ones that i hear aren't even close or very loud and they still scare her.

A valuable reminder @gooddream; we will definitely be at home with our furry ones. Even though we live a fair ways from the nearest "really loud" celebrations, I know they still get anxious when all the background popping and lights start up... we'll be here with them, most likely watching a show, and then quietly toasting midnight at home and going to bed.

I didn't know this! I'd hate to see a dog shaking in fear :(

Happy transition though. I love how you love her ♡

Get cozy in the house probably one good way. I miss the fireworks in Thailand though lol

Oh man. Right there with ya on that one. Pepper is a lot def now, plus plus. As for Molly, she hears just about anything and is scared of it. We would never to be able to leave the house. Thank goodness for the meds she is on for her Addisons Disease. They seem to calm her a bit more than before she was diagnosed. They don’t fire many fireworks off around here for New Years. At least not in our neighborhood. So we can rest a bit. Hope you have a nice peaceful night and I look forward to more of our friendship and your posts in 2020. Give Nadi a big hug for me!!!

I agree gooddream, I think it must be the same with dogs everywhere. Our shepard is the same way...not scared of anything except thunder and fireworks. So all week here in Texas it's been the same scenario with lots of gunfire and fireworks during the day and especially at night.

No way I'm leaving him alone for that trauma. Good on you.
