The Mongol Rap Horde on World Of Hip Hop

in blog •  6 years ago  (edited)

Welcome to World Of Hip Hop! Where we shine a light on some of the amazing Hip Hop talent from around the globe as a reminder that Hip Hop is everywhere!

I started out this episode wanting to focus on Ice Top, a Mongolian Hip Hop group that thrived on longevity and who I had a chance to meet and get to know back in 2004. I did feature one of their songs last year in a post for Record Pool.

When I started digging for some new material I discovered a "posse cut" featuring a slew of Mongolian rappers, which I thought would be a better fit for this post, and include a blurb about some of the acts that I'm aware of and share some dope videos.

Ice Top

In 2004 I took a 32 hr train ride from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar to meet up with Ice Top and I spent a month in Mongolia, being the first Western Hip Hop artist to ever perform in the country. It was an amazing experience that I can't really go into here, but I'd like to share one of my favorite videos from this group of street kids turned dancer, turned Hip Hop icons.

Mongolian Bling

I heard about this documentary being made about Mongolian Hip Hop just over 5 years ago and it brought me back to the time I was there. Watching it I learned about the new generation of Hip Hop artists and I think it's the perfect time to share the trailer in case anyone reading this is interested. Big shout out to Benji Binks for putting this together.

Last but not least, here's the latest featuring 15 of Mongolia's top Hip Hop artists all on one 10 minute long "posse cut". Not much more to say about this one, if you have the time to soak it in, you'll really get the flavor of what the Mongol Rap Horde have to offer.

Here's something interesting for you to take in as we leave Mongolia... These guys (Fish Symboled Stamp) are blending the traditional Khoomei (throat singing) with "rap" in a very interesting blend of styles. Now I can't really label this one as Hip Hop per say, but I did find it very interesting and demonstrates how important the traditional culture of Mongolians really is. Enjoy!

Thanks again for reading/watching and we hope you've enjoyed this edition of #worldofhiphop with me @vandigital.
