Early Bird Steem Advantage

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

earlysteem.png

Yesterday I visited a close friend nearby for a night walk and chat. It's been difficult to be able to spend time with friends these days as everyone's just busy with life. Anyway, he's the guy who actually got me back into the cryptocurrency game again years ago by asking me about Ethereum.

Looking back again.. boy, was I an early bird or what? The mining difficulties for both Bitcoin and Ethereum are insanely high now. I remember mining about 30 ethers per month with just my desktop gaming PC back in March 2016.

But I'm not very disciplined and a helluva disorganised person so all the mining was just half-baked and short-lived. Can't complain about the super early bird advantage though. Low risk, high reward. It's just pure early-game advantage like being the first to find an undiscovered gold mine. Or being the first player to arrive in World of Warcraft and slaying / looting everything precious before the masses.

So how about Steem? Mining difficulty as a witness is probably about the same as any computational hashing. Mining for curation and author rewards on the other hand is a little bit more unclear in terms of difficulty. After all, it's not like we have to produce some certain post the network is looking for just to be counted as a legit contribution. We're dealing with human-beings here, not machines.

Or another way is to just accumulate Steem Power. I know I've been saying this for two years now, but I'm just always puzzled looking at users powering down to zero. To put into perspective of everyday users, SP is quite the equivalent of acquiring more and more mining machines. More Steem Power, more virtual hash-power, more passive earnings. It's just perfect. No need to fuss over any hardware at all as it grows. I remember going all around town to source for graphic cards and spending time building ether rigs. What a pain in the ass.

If you think it's now too difficult earning Steem Power through author rewards, know that it's not the equivalent of mining on Bitcoin and Ethereum. Here there's virtually zero upfront cost required with the mining of author rewards, so the non-guarantee makes sense.

To make Steem mining more similar to the passivity of Bitcoin / Ether mining, one would need to risk some cold hard capital and set-up auto upvotes to support accounts / projects in order to earn the rewards. But that's just too much of a limited use case for Steem. The super early bird advantage here is just to use the platform and stay in the game. There are really no rigid limitations here despite a growing difficulty, simply because Steem mining isn't bounded by mere computational capacity. Human relationships and creativity will always be here for anyone to mine, anytime.

What really blows my mind is just how small a group those of us who joined in summer 2016 are now among the Steem community. And of course, there are even those who joined in March and April, what an early advantage they had...

Yeah man! Completely missed the march / april window. I looked back recently and the rewards were completely over the top! I know i got lucky too in may/june, but the march/april one is on another level..

Hi Kevin, thank you so much for sharing:

For many here who still don't see the magic of where we are today in Feb2018, this is they key statement here

To put into perspective, SP is the quite the equivalent of acquiring more and more mining machines. More Steem Power, more virtual hash-power, more passive earnings. It's just perfect.

It's possible for a new Steemian to accumulate 1000 Steem within a few months with hardwork and talent, but it's alot easier to accumulate some while it's still early by putting some of our earned money from our everyday talent (aka job) into Steem.

To do this while Steem is still <$10 is like mining ETH at $20, very soon sometime in 2018, it will be too late to get Steem at this low price.

Honestly we are really about to go hockey stick, see yellow shaded area below

Steem under $10.JPG
If this is a Steem chart, the yellow shaded rectangle area is likely where we are now

When critical mass hits (I suspect just over the 1 million account mark), there will be no stopping how fast and how quickly people will be adapting and adopting Steem for everyday use.

I hope this message hits home for many new readers here today.

be blessed,
dj123

for those of you who are not familiar with the hockey stick concept of critical mass acceleration, this is what the future of Steem looks like, this has already happened to BTC and ETH, and has not happened yet to Steem:

hockey-stick-Steem under $10.JPG
Just imagine the two yellow areas combined to become like a hockey stick (where 2nd area is >10x higher)

It's hard to say it WILL, because there are no guarantees. i'd rather see gradual growth, although i'm still scratching my head today wondering why steem isn't in top 10 :D

we are seeing gradual but accelerated growth, the only problem is that we're not seeing the market price recognition from, still our convoluted and complex ecosystem could be causeing some delay in 'market acceptance'

in market theory, the longer a dormant potential pents and build up, the higher the burst will be, this is true even in an absense of a significant market factor that cause a sudden acceleration like ICO to ETH, or like SMT will likely do to Steem

@dj123 my friends who are not on Steem keep asking me why invest in STeem and why not on a top 10 coin? I always say Steem will grow, just that it has not yet taken off. But I wonder if that is a sure thing that Steem will grow and see the price charts similar to what BTC and ETH saw? What do you think?

there are many risk, there is no sure thing in crypto, but Steem long term prospects are much stronger than most even those in top10

I believe in steem but everyone around me asks me where does the money come from...

they do not believe in something that is not generated by "sponsors or ads" hence the concept is hard to grasp and they are slow to adapt, and even for a lot of new crypto investors this is the case

sorry i thought you were responding to me (all this nested replies is confusing), it's a common point and reasoning for those who have not see the power of how blockchain is changing the tech field, i know some good respond, illustration, and even rebuttal, but i will let kevin have a chance to respond to you first since you directed it at him, don't give up on sharing @felander

I already fall in love with steem, and the steemit platform. I will do my very best to promote and educate those around me about the advantage of steem to other cryptos, when the time comes about the BOOM, we will be there to harvest, and contribute to the welfare of the majority.

that's a great attitude @guruvaj, it will take time for all of us to grow Steem, but don't doubt that you are making a big difference with everyone you tell, you have a big advantage being early before the 1st big big hockey stick, and here is a big secret there will be multiple hockey stick over the next decade.

I'm following you now kuya!

I love the graph! That tells pretty much everything :)

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

appreciate the compliment @gvincentjosephm, but it's @kevinwong's eth graph, I'm using it as a parallel illustration for what is likely going to start happening in the near future with Steem

go acquire some Steem, Power It Up and Go Beyond HODL (invest your best into the blockchain), your grandchildren will thank you

Holy sh*t I love your explanation about the whole concept about the future of Steemit dude can we be friends

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Glad you enjoy my musings....here's another of my reply, hope it tickles your braincells @stevensteel, promoting SBD (by grassroots word of mouth marketing) to accelerate onboarding new Steemians in 2018:

Keeping SBD High To Increase Recruitment Of New Steem Account

Dude, I love the way you think man! I followed you - would love if we could connect on Steemit and support each other on this journey!

thanks for the encouragement, appreciate it, come join us at #funny that's where most of the Steemians I interact with hangout

Steempower can do a lot more than just attracting people to your account. I just love it when I upvote a good content and I'm able to give more than 0.1 on the post. That's why I personally have been powering up since 1 steem was $1.2 .

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

The problem is that in order to get the best author rewards, I have to set up a bot to vote up all the authors that are always on the trending page due to all the other vote bots, regardless of the quality of each author's posts.

I fear this action only cheapens Steem and stifles its growth, so I would rather make less and upvote undervalued posts to keep the undervalued and new authors around.

I wish that the witnesses might change how curation rewards work, so dog-piling votes on the same few authors every week would no longer be economically viable, but I think it is probably not in their best interest to do so since they benefit so much from this model.

I know how hard it is to vote for less daily rewards in order to help Steemit grow, so I can't even blame the witnesses, but I really wish things would change.

I actually agree here @gonzo, wish there was a way to reduce the pile on effect without discouraging growth and creativity.

What scares me the most is the idea that if we don't act soon enough some other developer (maybe dan) figures out how to fix all these issues.

Then implements them in another social media site that is built on EOS or another blockchain and Steemit becomes just another friendster or myspace, leaving us holding the bag.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

the difference between us and friendster is that we're also a cryto, if we achieve some cirtical mass of adoption, people will always use us as a online and day2day currency

on the plus side, if eos, eth runs up very high, it actually attracts bigger investors and makes it harder for the everyday people to buy it or even mine it with creativity, hell you can't mine eos, you have to buy it from 1 billion tokens upfront.

this gives us a big underdog advantage to accumulate a Steemian userbase under the radar, we will have the masses, i see that happening with a great probability

BTW. @dan has a history of supporting his older project, it's unlikely he will try to take down bitshares (which his dad runs) with a new exchange and Steem(which he owns probably own close to 10million steem all up with other duplicate accounts like @freedom, also he stil has a big stake in Steemit Inc, can only guess how much Steem that equates to, but it's big!) with a new fb. It's more likely he will try to integrate Bitshares and Steem into the EOS ecosystem which will validate and help both thrive. In the future you'll start to see bridges of blockchain being build...such a protocol does not exist yet, but I see it coming to fruition and a standard within the next 5-10 years.

This is actually relieving to hear.
Thanks for the info :)

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

did you see my respond above to Kevin? That is a more likely scenario, hope it gives you knowledge and greatly encourages you about the bright prospect & brilliant future of Steem to come

Your comment makes alot of sense. As a person who only posts every so often the rewards are always minimal especially because I can not afford to pay for upvotes. I wish there was another way because this is the major flaw with the system and why it discourages me from using the platform in general.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

will power...use that and force yourself to be creative, i can understand being discourage if you put in the effort but you just started, the possibilities are limitless for all new Steemians

BTW. It takes usually 3-9 months of consistent effort to find your niche that will take you rep >60, this is my observation, persistency pays here

Hey @blazinbob419

To be honest, the best way of getting votes is by getting to know other Steemians on chat or discord, a lot of people tend to upvote the people that they feel a personal connection with.

Also I can definitely see a correlation between how involved new people are in the community and how much rewards they receive, but @dj123 is right, it does take time.

I hope this helps :)

I have never been able to get the chat to work. I tried to register and never got an email confirmation and I have tried twice. I dunno maybe I'm doing something wrong but the chat and me haven't gotten along so far. But other than the chat issue I really like steemit because it made me realize how little I know about computers and crypto so I have been learning like crazy since joining. So for me even though my rewards have been small the knowledge that I have gained has been more useful than anything else.

yeah i have heard others also had difficulty, try registering again, it's possible the mail server had an error, you can register with any email.

you will get less curation from those mass voted trending posts then from selecting manually others that do not have so much sp but a lot less votes

It feels good to be an early adopter in crypto :)
I joined crypto late 2013 started mining.. I shut down my rig after 2 years. Now I am just trading and follow the evolution. My portfolio became few times bigger because of the early adoption.. back then the feeling was uncertain.. I was feeling it was maybe too late.. the same feeling like at this moment of time :))
The funny thing though is that trading cryptos made my portfolio bigger but if I had my portfolio unchanged then the value of it it would be pretty much 100x more.. pff...... :P

The real mining is actually just spending time understanding and just doing something in the field :) yeah all my trades has never been for the better result lol. Every single one haha

My all friends are also getting married 😂
And i am just away from all this !!

Yeah I am collecting all the steem power !!!

I am trying my best to win this game, side by side increasing my experience in writing and gettinf improved day by day !!

Nice post etherpunk !! 👍🏻

Haha u read that before i removed it.

All the best!

Thanks for the post @kevinwong. I started steemit last December, yet i still feel like I am an early bird. what it is to doubt about the whole thing called steem, steemit, steem power? Nothing i see.

I'm in for this with all my energy. My zest is wrapped around it.

In year 2020, teenagers will be earning Steem Power to upvote their crush.

In year 2020, teenagers will be earning Steem Power to upvote their crush.

lol... sounds like a good meme for dmania

so we may see the rise of steemdiggers?

you all better believe this:

In year 2020, teenagers will be earning Steem Power to upvote their crush.
- @kevinwong Feb2018

such a good quote - and to honest, totally believable!:p

Lol like how we'd have flying cars by 2017?

Upvote their crush lol....

14th is Valentines Day... may be they are already here doing it

Haha...... yup... many people did that already... attractive people always get good upvotes...

HAHa !! Why did you remove it ?? You don’t want to tell others you are single 😛😂 Seems like you are high on demand !! LOL

30 ether per month, wow...

haha, will you marry with cryptocurrency millionaire guy..

NOpe 👎🏻 I will rather be a millionaire myself ✌🏻

Steem fueled brain cells is what lives in my head since 4th July 2016. I really don't care about the rest of the crypto, not because I have no stake in other coins, but mainly because mining them or buying them are not even close to be as satisfying mining producing authoring and curating is. We are steem junkies bro. We need an AA support for our addiction.

Not really junkies.. i mean it's just a social platform and everybody uses it anyway..

I've been talking about steemit to people in FB groups I'm in such as digital nomad groups or those who write blogs and create content regularly - i feel like steemit would be such a good place for them. a friend of mine recently started a writing project about skateboarding, and i showed her steemit - she loves it! we even talked about hosting skateboarding contests here where people upload tricks they are doing - like a virtual olympics! haha so fun! the possibilities are literally endless!

it's just an extra layer of currency on top of what we're used to.. no brainer to just start using! Skateboarding? I don't remember seeing any. Would be nice to see a community for that around here. Lemme know!

for sure will do! do you skate?! I'm more of an avid long boarder myself, but one of my good friends in NYC is actually a pro skater - one of the top female skaters of all time actually - Alexis Sablone. She won a few Xgames and everything! Anyway, yes it would be super cool! my other friend is super new to steemit (just setting up her account), so if you're a skater or looking to link up with them ill send you her posts once she's live :) she has her posts already written and is super ecited to jump onto steemit but is just waiting to be verified. i love it when newbies are excited about it as much as i am :) (lol im a newb too tho)

I used to a very long time ago, until I made a mistake down a flight of stairs and stopped after lol. Great, we need more non-crypto stuff on this platform! I'm even bored of talking about cryptos all the time!

edit: btw, digital nomadism, @sjennon is one, pretty active doing it too i think!

yikes! hopefully all the injuries healed with time! i used to be a lot more active than i am now after getting hit by a car while cycling, but I'm still pretty active! yoga, long boarding, motorcycles, cycling and dancing and building/designing - i like to move and make things ;p

digital nomadism is great! although I'm also tied to some places depending on my projects. I'm part of an organization called rLoop that is 1200 worldwide and we work on building tools and technologies completely remote and crowdsourced. its super fun - like hyperloop tech geek stuff:D

i need to do a post about it but sometimes i talk about it so much its nice to just sing songs and write poetry on here instead ;p

@sjennon - will check out your page and see where you're nomading :)

All very interesting stuff! I'd like to travel more too, but I can't do it too much until people actually let my dog travel around with me freely..

Yea I can see how you might have some difficulties there. I met a lady online in a travel group who had been traveling the world by bike for 2 years with her dog. And I know I've come across a traveling with your dog blog before - I'll see if I can trace it down and send to you! There are bloggers who have thought of everything !;p

Dude this would be awesome. I skated for a very long time and loved it. I have yet to see a single thing about skateboarding here. I think this is a great idea!

awesome - ill let you know when shes posted and maybe we can form a little skate steemit gang :)

Time really is a form of currency so in that sense there is a upfront cost but most people have time on their hand that have pretty much zero monetary value which can easily be invested in Steem.

That's true! I probably meant upfront cost in perspective of "skin in the game" :)

3 years ago my ex was mining bitcoin at his parents house using their electricity and fancy computers, and now he is probably stinkin rich haha.

I totally missed out on that, but I figure I can catch up now with Steem! Its like, powered by creativity!

I didnt know it was my dream to be a blogger or date a ninja (@offgridninja) but now I know it is! Haha, follow the opportunities I suppose. Why not?

You are perfectly right @kevinwong. It's good to be an early bird and what most people don't know is that steem is still very much in its early stage and could be acquired easily now beofre it moons further and become like bitcoin and ethereum and by then it really becomes the real pain in the ass.

I go on steemit just December last year and still trying to wrap my head around steem and steem power . I haven't invested any capital yet to steem power as I have been getting the little I can through my high quality posts on steemit but I hope to put in some investment into steem now that you have spoken about it.

I know that your disclaimer says ..this is not a financial advice.

But I think only the wise can see meaning in unspoken words.

thanks a lot @kevinwong for this.

Hey, thanks @sistem.

I go on steemit just December last year and still trying to wrap my head around steem and steem power .

What is your biggest question mark about steem at the moment?

Thanks for the reply @kevinwong...My biggest question now is...

Is there really a time when steem dollar will go back to its pegged $1 while steem keeps going higher just as been speculated by many and if that really happens, what will be the fate of people like me who don't have so much to invest in steem but depend on making good contents on steemit for sbd remuneration?

SBD will be up to market forces. It's not something I keep at all. I'll use it for getting more Steem Power or to buy other coins right away. Personally, I'd like to see Steem going higher and SBD going back to ~1 dollar.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Earlier this week, SBD gained relative to STEEM and other altcoins, evidently because it got a comparatively high B+ rating from some financial firm, though I for one could not make out whether the firm knew anything. Days later, these gains disappeared, likely due to some crypto-sector setbacks in South Korea and India.

I buy STEEM to power up. I buy SBD to spend. Yet the market volatility tempts me to speculate on them. Obviously a return to the $1 USD peg would make SBD speculation less tempting.

Great post, by the way!

I'm not subscribed and would really love to know their reasons for the good score.. top of my list as well :D

Later on, the firm gave STEEM the same B+ rating it had given SBD earlier.

please guidance sir @kevinwong

I couldn't agree more.

I recently tried my hand at mining monero, which is supposed to be one of the easiest coins to mine. After two weeks of mining 24/7 I had not reached 0.1 monero. That is the minimum withdrawal amount from minergate. I decided there was no point.

In that same time I mined a couple hundred dollars worth of Steem from my keyboard. If I needed to or I was a fool, I could pull it out any time.

I ain't doing that though, Steem Power all the way! Well, I spend some on SP leasing. Steem Power most of the way!

:-P

Thanks for the post.

Keep Steeming!

Mining (in the sense of running software to validate/produce blocks) is good for supporting the architechture. But I think Steem has a good balance for mainstream users in form of SP..

Aim for at least 660 SP imo.. (that's what I tell my friends). That's the average for 1 million SP users on the platform in 20 years!

@wdougwatson Dude I was in the same situation haha and now I'm all about that Steem/SP game baby!

Makes sense....Coming from an early adopter I agree with you on that....
Steemit is a success because we built a good community and also do away with POW mining and all the mess with it DPOS is the way to go if we want to see steemit grow....! 👍😊
Power up steemians!!! 🚀

POW is good for truly open, permissionless networks. But waste of money and energy..

I totally agree with your analogy that SP is pretty much the account holder's hash power, as that is pretty much what it is. As your influence on steem increases, the more effect you can have on steemit both in terms of curation and accumulating more steem power (hence increasing your influence and you get the idea).

Those who power down really should think about what they're doing. It's for their own good to keep their steem locked up as steem power, rather than cashed out and spent, etc. Of course reward yourself once in a while, maybe take profits when steem spikes, but buy in the dip again, putting the money back into the steem ecosystem.

Thanks for the well explained post as always, Kevin. Always happy to hear from you.

I’m thinking the same thing. I’m just wondering how the hell I can get from 1100 sp to where you are at now. The sbd spike helped a lot but if we don’t see a lot of those....

I realize 1000 sp will probably make it easy enough to earn a living on steemit one day, but I sure would love to be able to make a GOOD living and share the wealth with all the cool small fish I meet.

I’ll think of something...

In 20 years there will be 660 million Steem (but not much more after that). If 1 million people use Steem by then, that's an average of 660 Steem Power / person. That's already above average :)

Hi @kevinwong
I think that mining on Steem is a cancerous tumor, since the first post that appeared here was indicated by the tag #meta but not #crypto #mining or #currency. I think under the label, the authors meant that delightful opportunity of freedom, which people are again trying to exchange for a cage of greed.
I hope that this additional difficulty will only become an assistant in the formation of a new culture.

Hmm not sure i fully understand what you're saying. I'm lost. Mind elaborating?

I'm talking about the fact that this platform can't realize its full potential because of the mercenary nature of mankind, so I express the hope that we will be able to give real battle to our weaknesses on Steemit!
But for this we need to shift attention to this. The question is not how to make more money quickly, but how to make the world brighter, to fill it with beauty and joy.

Steem Power pretty much stronger to contribution in this blockchain.
I have only 04 months experience in steemit. But since first day to now only collected 110 steem power. I'll try to collect more steem power. I know Steem power gives good result to earn rewards from authors.

Ah yes, looks like you've been busy. What do you like most so far?

Thanks for quick feedback @kevinwong. I most like to grow my steemit journey. But I know my steem result not enough to gain steem power. What's steps I'll follow now?

Thanks for the post @kevinwong

My brother was an early bird to crypto and I'm hitting myself for not having asked him about crypto earlier. I always just felt I was not in the position to invest in something I didn't understand. Since December, I started learning about everything crypto and have fallen in love with it.

In January this year I discovered Steem and have absolutely love the platform. I love that fact that there are zero upfront costs required - especially for the newbie. I have since invested a small amount of money into steempower and haven't looked back.

Very exciting times! Thanks for the post @kevinwong

Hey, I feel excited just reading that you're excited about the space lol. It really is a great piece of technology.

It really is exciting. I just can't find enough time in the day for everything I want to do/read/learn about Steemit and crypto in general

We are Early Bird here .Take a look at Fb's mcap more than 500 B , we know Steemit is better than Fb and it's mcap is only around 1.5B . Imagine how much steem will grow Fb is waste of time , we got everything here on steemit . News , gags (dmania ) , dtube , steemchat and there are many more which i haven't figured out yet ! Buy some steem while you can , before it's too late .

Lol i've also lost track on what's being built here. It's a good sign though, because it's like we don't even know everything that's on the Internet itself :)

yeah dude , internet is too big that too without considering dark web . Fb recently lost a million users and steem gained 20-40k users this week .

I am one of the early birds of steemit and I've been away for over a year, things have somewhat changed, @dantheman is not around, heard that he's in some other project now.

I'm superlazy. One of the reasons I haven't grown much but still glad that I was early on here. :D

Hey man I still remember you :) lol i get you. I wish there's an app which measures my brainwaves and types out posts for me automatically :P

I would definitely download that app. hahahaha

I use steem more like a social media or club of interests. I've got a lot of good acquaintances with whom I would gladly meet and have a conversation. And It's also a great place to get yourself motivated.
Upvoting factor plays its role perfectly. It gives you the ability to monetise any of your startups. So basically you can do anything you want lol.

steem is like real life!

Welcome back, Kevin, it seems that you’ve been gone for a bit 🤓

Funny, even at 3 months young on this platform, I feel like something of an early bird, too, as I begin to get the hang of it.

Investing more time and energy, here, mining it for possibilities -dsound, DTube. I who thought I’d never blog, am doing so with more ease. Also, previously hopeless at saving, I’m now powering up most of my earnings :)

It’s a good place to grow and challenge oneself. As you say, ‘human relations and creativity will always be here for anyone to mine, anytime’ ✌🏼

I figured out this early bird in a crypto is very important as down the road it will pay dividends. I bought my first 100 steem just a few months back when it was around $1/each. Regret not buying more but those 100 help be out of limitations such as bandwidth and upvote power.

Your encouragement is definitely hopeful and I intend to hold on to my SP for many years to come. Not going to power down any time soon. Thanks!

Is it easy to run out of bandwidth?

minnows below 10 SP are having some trouble posting and upvoting. Some are posting pictures and videos not realizing they have limited bandwidth. I think a lot of the witnesses have been trying to help in delegating SP and teaching new users about bandwidth. It definitely is hindering steemit's growth, but people will learn. Thanks.

Or another way is to just accumulate Steem Power. I know I've been saying this for two years now, but I'm just always puzzled looking at users powering down to zero.

I feel the same way. It's all about continuity. 1 Steempower every day, equals to 7 Steempower every week - 30 per month and 360 per year.

And 1 Steempower per day is actually fairly easy to accomplish. Take this number times 3 or times 5 and it's a good sum.

Additionally, this sum gets more, the more active and known you are on Steem.

To make Steem mining more similar to the passivity of Bitcoin / Ether mining, one would need to risk some cold hard capital and set-up auto upvotes to support accounts / projects in order to earn the rewards. But that's just too much of a limited use case for Steem

Vote-Selling and delegating Steempower is in my opinion the most truest form of using Steempower as active dividends.

And I know: some people don't like it.

But the truth is: Steem is not just a Blogging-Plattform but a blockchain and everyone is free to do what they want with their stake.

We are still in the early phase of Steem - even though not as early as when you joined, @kewinwong.

And when you take @ned's goal of having over 100.000 Apps & Business built on Steem by 2020 in consideration - then the reason to mine as much Steempower as possible through Posting, Voting, Vote-Selling or Delegating is actually fairly logical.

What I mean with that is: we are right now in the phase where everyone should accumulate as much Steempower as possible (without abusing the System of course) because if Steem evolves as in @ned's vision, then Steem & Steempower will become very valuable.

I think people powering down to zero don't really know what Steemit is all about, they are scared that it will crash someday.

well, the same goes for everything else actually..

I wish I know about all this few years back, it looks more easier back then comparing to now. Now just too many strategic mind game needed to apply, luckily it's not for me, I'm just doing the old fashion way, write, write, write...

Might actually be good to take a break from writing and explore this crazy space haha.. I dunno, I just find it fascinating because its shaking things up and showing us more about ourselves. But I certain have been writing lesser these days because of it!

It is interesting actually but sometimes it scares me as the technology is going so fast, you might break some bone doing it. Until I have my 660SP (as you mention comment above), I might need to just stick to writing... hahaha

Very interesting perspective @kevinwong. I got in to Ethereum pretty early too, but never mined it (unfortunately!).
I am only actively on Steemit for the past month or two, but I already understand the ecosystem pretty deeply and can see why it is such a good time to be on Steemit earning rewards.

By the way, I'm running a project called the Steemit Success Initiative, which is a project that aims to grow and develop Steemit as a platform, as well as help grow its users. You can read more about it on my page, but I would really appreciate your feedback/support on it.

Will check it out - thanks @lukebrn :)

Thank you @kevinwong!

The only thing I´m struggling with is, that self-upvoting is more profitable than spreading upvotes for curation rewards. I don´t like that, but I have to do it to grow my SP. I would prefer to spread my vote love much more, but as long as it is this way, I would only hurt myself and therefore also others on the long run (it helps no one, if my SP is low either....)

I've been doing about 5% self upvote, or less since I started. But actually, don't fuss over it, just use your votes however you like..

that self-upvoting is more profitable than spreading upvotes for curation rewards

Direct profit, sure. But I think there's more intangible stuff to be gained here (which could turn into something tangible in the future)

Thank you for your encouragement! I just leased some SP from blocktrades the past weekend and to make this investment profitable over the next 90 days, I have to upvote myself a lot more than I initially like - so it´s always a question of what I like to do vs. what really makes sense in a ROI way...
Oh, and about this "early adopter" thing.... it´s awesome, that you were this early, and I have to constantly remind myself, that even the people joining now, are still early adopters - we are still under 100k active daily users - which is nothing!

The true mining of cryptos imo not actually about running code or even steem power, it's just spending time understanding and operating in this field. It just so happens that SP is a great complement for our digital lifestyle, in which social is a huge % of it..

This is an amazing thought, that would deserve an own post! 👍
It instantly resonates with me.... If you don´t want to write about this, I´ll do! 😉

Fer realzzzzzzzz

When I met you 2 years ago my mindset was kinda fucked. Glad to be back though! I guess they were necessary lessons.

Were you fucked? haha.. i thought u were just busy with life

totally fucked yo. I mean not super fucked up, just wasn't thinking ahead.

Hoarding steem now and that's about it. I read some of your comments below, and I would be happy if SBD is pegged at a 1:1 equivalent of steem, kinda works for people to get steem and also be able to encash some of their rewards. getting steem power from posts has become a little difficult now that the value of steem has gone up. It's become like a leaking tap, dripping steem every now and then.

What do you mean when you say "spend cold hard cash to setup auto upvote bots". How do you do that?

Oh the cold hard cash and auto upvote bots aren't related. check out SteemAuto.com :)

Hi @kevinwong. I wish I was an early bird as well, however its never to late to be on steemit. Personally I think we have not even touch the surface and believe steem have a huge potential to grow much higher as the platforms are build on human relationship as you’ve mentioned in your post.

When would be the best time for us newbies to power up? Looking st the sbd against steem spread is quite small. I want to power my SP but feel like the spread is too small. Should I wait maybe until CNY is over?

Spread, what kind of spread? No ideas about best time.. I always think its the best time unless we're in an all-time high

What i meant was the spread between sbd and steem price is quite small to capitalize on getting more steem when we buy steem. However thanks for your insights. Will definately buy steem with my sbd and powering up.

Oh okay, i get what you mean now..
I'm not a TA expert of any sort so I would just draw some support/resistance lines and just ladder down buys. That's these days anyway. Two years ago I just power up often just to capitalise on growing curation rewards. I thought 0.05% - 0.2% growth / week just by attempting to curate good content alone is pretty awesome. Quite a loose estimate, and I like that the number isn't on the level of a get-rich quick scheme..

What a fantastic way to look at it. Changes the way I look at content creation on Steem.

I'm a noob and just a minnow in a big sea but as soon as I 'got it' and understood what this place COULD become and is becoming...Powering up was automatic for me.

I have my plan to continue to invest in this platform not only buy purchasing Steem but creating content that of value to the community.'

Wish I got in when you did but alas...I'm GRATEFUL I'm here now :)

Top o' da mornin' to ya brother! Yes steem is quite unique in the ways of acquiring it. It's so addictive and can be used to purchase other coins although I tend to hoard what I gain. I wish other coins would do the same or implement ways of getting into them other than trading or buying without having to break the bank to do so? Anyways always enjoy your thoughts and posts! Seems you did quite well in ethereum? AWESOME!

I didn't keep much at all when it break past $50, mostly went diversified.

I wish other coins would do the same or implement ways of getting into them other than trading or buying

Yeah cryptocommunities should consider a pool for their own SMT to do so..

What’s interesting about Steem is that we are definitely in early adopter stage and even with all the user interface issues that are experienced from time to time, new users keep on showing up in the masses. Last I checked Steem Alexa ranking is almost going to be in the top 1000 websites in the world. That is quite impressive. Can’t imagine where we go when the interface improves and the applications that are in the pipeline are deployed.

Steemconnectv2 seems like its been delayed. I'm waiting for that.. i think it'll be like the beginnings of FB (with apps dashboard and such but I might be entirely off about it). Not sure if top 1000 is impressive with so much money flying around. I'm thinking like top 100 by now lol..

I learnt from your post the necessity of powering up and am trying to do it. Yet to set auto votes, I tried it sometime last week and my voting power was down to point zero. So for some day I did not curate much as I removed the auto upvote.

But now I think I will try and go back and set my autovoter so that I can be able to earn more steem power.

Thank you for sharing.

We'd definitely need better tools for autovotes (perhaps some parameters to consider frequency of posting and such) because like you mentioend, too easy to deplete voting power..

I think so too.

What if people power down to become early birds on a different platform...

That's smart, for quick and easy work. Naturally, more vote % for long-term players (powering down doesn't indicate short/long term by the way). In the end, a protocol is just a protocol and all new language / currency / culture evolve over time as people use it..

Gotcha...For me even selling Steem in order to participate in other projects doesn’t indicate short term point of view for Steem. I sold some during the recent pump in order to participate in more projects and communities with the intention to buy back in and more when Steem (or the overall hype) falls once again (which probably will happen in our volatile market).

In the end, a protocol is just a protocol and all new language / currency / culture evolve over time as people use it..

Couldn’t agree more.

well sometimes you have to be lucky :D but i guess you did some intelligent things, otherwise you would not be in the position you are in. as far as steemit, do you think it's still early early? I have the impression there is so much action and everyone writes that all the big names are coming over at the moment from other platforms. wondering what you opinion is on this.

Everything in my mind since 20 months ago is saying that steem could be one of the top 5 coins.. (plenty of posts about it too if you scroll down)

thanks for answering :) i will check out the others

Mining 30 ethers/month with just a gaming PC O.o that's about $24,000 a month at today's prices. Crypto is insane.

Traded about 200 of those for steem when eth was about 12 dollars and steem was 3-4 dollars in 2016 :p but no regrets at all

Eh it's fine, hard to predict the future :)

Excellent post and i also like to mentioned that steem mining also won't consume huge amount of electricity and this coin also has zero tx fees and with the upcoming developments like smt and communities the future also looks so bright, so i think mining steem or buying steem and hodl it will produce great results in near future, thanks for sharing your nice thoughts with us friend, Stay blessed

I found this article to be very helpful.

I am only getting started here with Steemit, but for me being a beginner it is a fun way to earn while you engage with other like-minded people all within a helpful community. Look forward to reading more of your articles Kevin

Thanks @libby-stories. Try to keep your feed relatively uncluttered at the moment so anyone visiting will see less spam and understand more about your account if they check it out :)

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the tip?? With that said, can you kindly explain how I would go about to keep that feed uncluttered, please??

I am still learning on this site, and am adding people who share my same interest, but not sure on how this all works yet either, so welcome all tips. Thanks

Feel free to post suggestions, etc. The protocol is right, but the applications will always be a work in progress. I'm having trouble myself keeping things uncluttered and organised haha..

Dude I am following you because your posts are clear and help me to understand how to win here. I write great content and my followers are increasing. So I will just keep it going baby until the rewards start coming in more. Thanks again. By the way, how long have you been on the platform?

Hey thanks @davidallenjones. Been here for about 21 months :)

Can we count that it's still early? I mean it's still in beta, so... I have a feeling that it will grow so big that in the future people will regret not starting accumulating steem right now.

Time will tell :)

How do i buy @haejin's rig?

he's using a quantum computer..

Ya Mon, well said. I keep telling my friends and family, some of whom have taken to Steemit and some of whom have not that even today they are still "early birds" as you call them. Perhaps not as early as me, or you, however definitely still in the infancy that is Steemit.

P.S I did not take this a financial advice ;)

I'm late bird for Steem :)

More Steem Power, more virtual hash-power, more passive earnings. It's just perfect.

May the Steem Power be with you!

We have more opportunities to get early bird advantages. Steemit best media platform more than face book or whatsapp etc...Those medias spend our golden time massive. We have few life time on the floor. So try to being creative. We have create contest via steemit using more options like as a memes, peoms etc...via Dlive, Dsound and Dmania. Currently we all birds know different time to growth-up to us.
But must remember...We all are birds...So why you don't try to flying in sky? Sure we can Fly.....

Such a good read. Early birds are always catch early worms aren't they?

I completely agree with you, the extraction of Bitcoin and Ethereum is becoming increasingly difficult and not profitable and the fact that now there are such alternatives as the Steem is very encouraging to us in terms of further development. You are right, such a function as the SP gives a lot of positive moments, since we do not need to buy expensive equipment for coin mining, thereby making the Steem the most attractive and promising! Thank you @kevinwong

Hi @kevinwong, Thanks for the story, It's very motivated.

This is such an important post - Steemit is all about accruing SP and investing back in the platform! Thank you for sharing this @kevinwong!

Like

a very interesting story. hopefully can be an inspiration for all users stemit

This is the reality of the steem network. Thanks for sharing sire.

After all, it's not like we have to produce some certain post the network is looking for just to be counted as a legit contribution. We're dealing with human-beings here, not machines.

Haha you're absolutely right my friendz also getting married now a days and have no time to talk with me 😒 well when who need to talk with me I've to lift to friendz. Yeah steem mining is not bounded, i'm new newbie I've also neend to build steem power to sucsessful here on this platform

Steem is a very good coin to invest in .We can call steem as the underdog which people consider in crypto marketbut still it has a lot of potential because when many coins were flat steem was the coin that showed resistance ....Nice post @kevinwong keep steeming !!

I did not know much about this, but I came across your writing and learned..I like this post and thank you @kevinwong

great writing and good job dear @kevinwong

grate information.....so good.......@kevinwong

Early kevin gets the cryptos. But i think that we are still at very early stage in terms of steem because good things are yet to come.

Wow.. amazing post i appreciate your post thanks for sharing this blog.. Best of luck my dear friends.. resteemit..

awesome nice post in this post some information for me , bro i am new here on steemit if you upvote my comment hope my rank will be hight ,hope for the best..
please follow me @rizwanlooni

There you GO STEEM is easy to mine. To Be Successful here you just need to be Consistent and build relationships.

Thank you @kevinwong for this beautiful post. I am bit confused about steem power and SBD. Which one is better to hold for say next five years. I read that steem power is subject to only 15 days, after that it will be distributed. Please give some insights, I want to stay as long as possible. I have read the blue and white papers.

SP, i never keep sbd..

Mantap beatifull

Very good write up early bird are the one enjoying the most of the post in steemit and steemit power

I believe there should not be a' I wish I was born earlier' excuse. It's a lesson for me as well

This is the one article I need to show my friends to convince them the potential of steem. virtually zero upfront cost.

@bitrocker2020 - Steem = Social mining

Steemit is truly the easiest way for anyone to start their crypto journey.

You're right, I agree with you. Thanks for your opinion.

thank you for sharing @ kevinwong, maybe this is good enlightenment to add my knowledge as a beginner, input from you lesson for @ jhoni, good picture friend.

yes, I write and always excited with hope, hopefully I will be able to deposit steam power that much like you

Hello @kevinwong, this is my very first time of getting to read any of your post. I must say it is quite informative.

I just got to join the steemit platform less than a month ago. I'm still trying to get a good level of knowledge about steemit.

And I intend getting STEEM tho but the little earnings I'm having, I'm using it to pay off some debts. Once I'm done, I'm intending to purchase as much steem as possible cuz I'm seeing a great potential in this crypto coin.

Who else benefitted from this post?

IMG_20180212_101230_426.JPG

I did.

Thanks for sharing ways to mine more steem @kevinwong. I would try them out

You fell in love crypto just at the right time ... mining is now on the verge of highest difficulty but something need to be done in that region for sure lets see how it will goes in some time

Yes. Right. Stay in the game and enjoy the ride.😎Now I power up some bit this month.

thanks for this information. very useful for me as a beginner in steemit
regards

well thanks for posting posting this amazing article i have gain a lot from it nice share

In a nutshell Bitcoin mining is the process where a computer hashes through encrypted codes to provide the power needed to actually carry out transactions within the network. Just like when you send money from your bank account to another, computer power is needed.
The reward for doing this work is given in Bitcoins, every time the correct hash is found which they call mining a “block”, a reward is given to the specific miner that got it. Often many miners join together in pools to group their processing power, giving a greater chance of finding these blocks where they can then share the reward.

Your post is very informative , I like your style. I am waiting for your next post.

I like striking acquaintance with selfless people like @kevinwong- wanting everyone to get wealthy....Sharing the need to possess more STEEM POWER.

"oh yes! the early bird gets the early worm."

I love innovation and disruptions! I love anything that challenges the status quo for the betterment of mankind. STEEM will “Napster” the finance and social media industry.

Thanks @kevinwong great read and looking forward to seeing where i am as an early bird by 2020

SP is the real treasure on this platform because you can literally walk away and it still works for you. No idea why anyone would want to power down.

You have a very interesting story. I did not have time to finish reading the first time. In vain removed about a rare unicorn - it was funny))) Obligations limit our time and it's true.

@kevinwong thank you great article thank you
##Upvote/Resteem###

very good writing, and very useful, contain information bantyak, I like

Well said @kevinwong. Of course Only advantage here in play in game and stay in steem platform. If not we can't win early bird advantage.
It's hard growing period in platform coz join more newbies. If be creative we can stay.
Increase steem power best way to staying and playing game.
I have collect some SP. I guess not enough so I tried to make blog post.
I'll do my best for win this game.

Thank you for emphasising more on the importance of powering up the steem power. It always has been my strategy to power up my steem power. But right now, because of curiosity, I leased 99% of my Steem Power.
Hope to hit 500 SP very soon.
Thank you.

I was a sceptic when Bitcoin was introduced, I was a sceptic when Ether was introduced, I was a sceptic when Steemit was introduced, I'm a dumb ass. Hopefully I'm not too late joining this platform.

I understand your feelings some time ago, because I'm starting my way in the world of cryptocurrency))) I agree, that Steemit not required initial investment, there is no risk. And your work in any case will be rewarded! Thanks for the post!

I also still don't understand once against both Bitcoin and Ethereum. But if there is information that tells a very clear, I will hear it :) @kevinwong

I agree. I'm new to steemit and I decided that I will buy steem power with all my SBD earned. Is not easy to grow but I enjoy the journey so far. :)

We just have to mine our own creativity and explain our points of view.

Yeah
Using the platform and staying in the game is it

Yes, steemit is the best passive + active income generator

I was actually considering buying a mining rig here in China to mine ETH. Now I am glad I didn't go with it and focused more on Steem. With Steem, I don't need to worry about electricity and hardware costs and other stuff. Steem has some issues, but I trust that things will improve in the future.

Kinda unrelated but - why don't you use all five tags in your posts? That'd result in more visibility right?

In this blog you have discuss many important though about Steemit SP auto vate, bitcoin ,That is very important for all of us.You have many important t point from your friend and share this blog.I mean it so helpful blog.
Keep it up

you had the best time when you joined it must feel great after that decision to join it :)

Steem Power was difficult to mine last year as well as this year too at least for me.

Another advantage Steem's Proof of Brain mining is that the speculators are pumping up of Steem Dollars. So there's a huge Proof of Brain mining advantage through commenting and curation (and building relationships with content creators you enjoy), thanks to the speculators pumping up Steem Dollar.

I begin to grasp some understanding about steem mining now. Yes it's true powering up is the way to go to reap future rewards. Thanks for the reminder
