In Venezuela there are several types of games that are presented in the Venezuelan Creole society. In this post I will talk about trompo, gurrufío, trastras, pañyola, papagayo and yoyo.

  • Trompo: is a toy with a round shape, was first made of wood, but is currently made of plastic, is characterized by having a metal tip on the bottom, to use it you must roll a string or "guaral" around it and throw it on the floor until I make it dance.

  • The Gurrufío: this toy is made up of a circular sheet, whether made of wood, plastic or tin, this sheet has two holes, in which a string or "guaral" is traversed. To use it, the sheet must be turned around the string and the arms should be stretched constantly to rotate the sheet even faster.

  • The Metras: also known as marbles, are small spherical balls of porcelain, glass or wood, these are placed inside a circle in which the goal is to take out all the metras except yours, the way to throw them is by supporting your knuckles in the floor and with your thumb give them impulse.

  • La Perinola: a toy that equal to the spin was mainly made of wood and then happened to be manufactured in plastic, this toy consists of 2 parts joined by a string or "guaral", the first piece is of a hollow bell shape by inside and the second a stick in which the bell should be inserted.

  • The Papagayo: originated in Asian lands and brought to Venezuela thanks to the Spanish, is a lightweight wooden structure covered with tissue paper or any lightweight fabric. This is tied to a string and flies by the force of the wind, even adding a tail for stability.

  • Yoyo: is a toy made up of 2 circular parts, joined by a small cylinder between them and separated by a few centimeters, in the cylinder goes a string which is used to lower and raise the yoyo. Traditionally it is made of wood, but it is currently in plastic mainly.
