Notepad++ Crashed and I Lost Over 90 Unsaved Files from the Past 2 Years :(

in blog •  6 years ago  (edited)

I'm really bummed out right now. For the past 3 years I've been using Notepad++ and not saving what I write until I'm done, or even until it was posted. It made for less spaces taken up in the tab text with so many files open. I found it more convenient. When I close NP++, all the unsaved files are restored from a backup folder in the user roaming data.

I was writing a post for Steem and had gotten about 3-4 paragraphs done. Then after I did ctrl+z, or at least that's what I think I did like I've done many times before, there were odd characters that appeared in the footer text I have for all my posts. I tried to undo the changes, but it was only undoing my written text.

Then I tried to past over the footer text, and everything disappeared. Then the app crashed. Upon reopening, all the unsaved files were missing, and the backup folder was empty.

I've lost all my unsaved files from the past 1-2 years. I had just written stuff in 6 new files which are gone. It's such a bummer :(

But, I have to strive on as there is nothing I can do about it...

Lesson learned. From now on I will saved my files, even if it's less convenient to have the file names in the tabs. That's more convenient that losing all the unsaved files because the app crashed and erased all the unsaved files as backup files that it's supposed to have....

Maybe this can help. I can imagine how much this sucks for you. Good luck, I hope you can recover the files.

Yeah I tried, the backup files are gone. :(

This has happened to me before, it was actually an excel sheet with some passwords in.

Try a few recovery software options. I tried about 5 before I got one that could get my files. The file didn't have its original name though, but everything was still in it. Had to dig quite a bit. It's possible though. Good luck!

Which one ended up working?

Honestly can't remember, just googled a few and installed them one after the other. Ran test after test until they eventually helped me recover my file. Took a while, but I know its possible.

never used notepad ++ but did i understand it good, you did not save a file for 1 year plus? why o why? you don't do video edits do you? 😀 i save in like every 10 minutes, everything, always. at least you have some of it on a blockchain.

As I mentioned, I didnt want to save them because of the name of the file taking up too much space in the tab :/

Dannng! That's rough.. Sorry to hear that man..
I've lost a few of my note files in the past due to weird Notepad glitches and it really sucked! Lost a bunch of stuff but not nearly as much as you did.. That's gotta hurt. What I do these days is try to back up everything on an external hard drive as soon as possible, though even now that's a bit of a hassle and not perfect.. However at least when I lose something these days it's not nearly as much as it used to be. Now it's usually just like a couple weeks or months of data instead of a year or more.. Hard lessons to learn!

There might be, there's a few software solutions that might work that recover data, but you have to stop all i/o to the drive so it has a better chance at recovering it.
