The politics of the journey to work

All journeys begin somewhere. For me, each morning, it’s my 21 bus service into Norwich City (England). And there are protocols for such a journey!

It’s 06.21 gmt. I’m tired. Work looms. Grumpy Taylor may emerge today.

Now...here in the Uk, we are creatures of habit. We have set ways, set times and methods to most things. More importantly, that first journey on the bus is sacred. Here’s why...

  1. Exact same people at bus stop every day.
  2. Exact same seating every day.
  3. Exact greetings to each person getting on.
  4. Exact farewells as each person getting off.
  5. Exact same moan if bus isn’t late.

This is a way of life, an institution if you will.

But here lies the issue. This peaceful transition between home and the slog can start badly - for one reason only.... a stranger is sitting in your seat.

Pure and utter madness I hear you say. Correct!

There is nothing more funny, entertaining yet annoying to see this drama (more pantomime) play out when regulars get on and find some random person in ‘their’ seat.

Of course it’s not really there god given right to that seat but all the same, it tends to seem like a political ring. One misplaced regular disjars everyone else. Seating arrangements change as people try to adjust to this travesty of justice.

I hope you enjoyed that little ditty for what it’s worth. Safe day to all and have a great day!
