The Stone Age was named because stone was the most important material used by the first tool-makers. These early stone-crafting techniques show surprising skill. Axe and scrapers were made from flint. Spear heads were shaped from deer antlers. The hand axe was probably the most important early Stone Age tool. Stone Age people hunted with bows, spears and flint axes. On the american grasslands, groups of hunters drove to extinction large grazing animals such as mastodons and giant bison. The humans' intelligence, weapons and teamwork made up of their comparative lack of strength and speed.

People discovered how to make fire by using a simple wooden stick called a fire drill. The drill was turned quickly over a piece of dry wood until it produced enough heat to start the fire.
