Can we enjoy movies/games without being political?

in blog •  6 years ago  (edited)

I am only saying out loud here. If you want to read my thoughts, go ahead and read. If you're going to be offended, move on.

So, I've been observing the entertainment that we currently have these days. An activity that supposed to be fun in nature turning to be a political stage. I've only been born 22 years ago, so perhaps I don't know much of movies in the past. Has it always been like this? but since I am learning about literature, I understand there are several approach to interact with literary works which often will be adapted into movie.

I offer two approaches of examining literary works, including movie, series, game, film and any other types of entertainment. The first is the intrinsic approach which deals on the form of the work itself. We view the work as a complete work and can not be altered based on our will. It is what it is. We only have the choice to examine the plot, the form, the style, the symbolism (which I think is still relative), and the choice of words the author/creator use. The second one is the extrinsic approach which puts the socio-historical background, history and autobiography as an important factor to examine. This approach is rather a compare and contrast towards the author's ideology, the time of the work was written and how it is displayed in the work. Is the author/creator criticizing the current situation? or is the author/creator agreed with the current situation. Now, which type are you?

I am the type of person who sees a work as a complete form. I enjoy movies, games, film, books and will examine it using intrinsic approach more than extrinsic approach. I am less interested in examining a dead person's ideology especially when their ideology is justified by someone else and not their own words. Unless of course, they had an interview in the past where I can read/ see their views on love, on politic, on religion or other things.

I've been reading lately that a show of this or that is not diverse enough, it's not colorized enough, it's not inclusive enough. Hell duh, an author isn't the know it all person. Of course the author/creator might miss a certain representation because they haven't encountered it or perhaps they live in a culture where everyone has the same color. I am aware of fact that it's called adaptation for a reason but should we alter too much of history and create something that isn't there the first place?

Can we just enjoy as it is without criticizing it too much? I suppose we can learn something when we see it as a complete work. I don't discourage anyone to stop criticizing any entertainment but demanding something that's outrageous, ruining the plot and eventually, making it as an incomplete work, seems to me as being unappreciative towards author/creator's work, who spend hours even years of making it happen. This resonates with the freedom of creativity. If we try to put a certain standard then there is no freedom of creativity anymore. The entertainment that we have will be boring as hell. It will also create a certain type of formula and archetypes. Finally, I think not conforming to the current narrative is a good thing and it keeps the freedom of creativity alive, whether you like it or not.

Many films and video games that are remade these days have changes made to them that allow them to fit in to the way the world is these days.

When it comes to video games the final product sometimes doesn't come until after the game is released and paid for by many of the customers who bought the product. Updates to games, extra content, can be downloaded from the creators.

hahahahahahaha hmmm.. since I am on a weight loss, I need to find a better replacement for my salted popcorn!

!Popcorn is still a better snack than a lot of other snacks. I often use it to open my fasting period. Google it. Popcorn is rather healthy too. 🍿😁
