How Did This Happen

The short answer is that they chose to give up freedoms in favor of the collective.

There use to be a saying when I was growing up, "sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never harm me". It's what parents would tell their children in order to prepare them for when other kids say mean things to them, because kids can say really me things. This was done, because everyone one in the world can have an opinion and everyone in the world can say what they think, only you don't need to believe what they say. If someone had to tell you to go jump off a bridge, because you happen to like a certain movie or band, you don't actually have to do it. It's not a command that you must follow, it is just someone else's opinion. You get to decide if you think that opinion is valid or not, this is a freedom that does come with a downside, which is sometimes hearing things you might not agree with.

If you could choose, would you rather not be allowed to say anything no one likes, or let people say anything they want? Which of these two options gives you more freedom? If you went with the first, who get's to decide what may or may not be said? What if the people who get to decide this are the people you don't agree with? My personal opinion is to give those that are able to rule over us the least amount of power. You should be fine with your worst enemy having that exact power over you.

"At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child, miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is a philosophy of sniveling brats." - P. J. O'Rourke

When comedians start telling you that there are topics and things you are not allowed to say, you should take notice. They have always been a barometer of sorts when it comes to freedom of speech. We should always be allowed to criticize our political overlords, as well has our own hypocrisy and laugh about it. This is how we learn and grow, by challenging opinions with humor it opens up the discussion to a conversation. When the laughter dies, is when we should start paying attention that we do not loose our voice.

"It is a paradox that every dictator has climbed to power on the ladder of free speech. Immediately on attaining power each dictator has suppressed all free speech except his own." - Herbert Hoover
