Hi all,
I'm currently an intern for a large fortune 500 company and remember reading some journals from past interns at other companies during my recruiting process and recall them being a pretty good read. Seeing as though I have a few hours to kill each day, I thought it might be nice to start posting here on Steemit while keeping a sort of... journal... of my summer experience.
Just as a disclaimer, all of what I write will mostly go over my thoughts on individual interaction, general work load,.... the little things. Conversations about internal operations/projects will be omitted for obvious reasons.
Preface, I'm working as a summer intern within my company's FP&A (Financial Planning and Analysis) division helping forecast some costs for the next quarters budget.
ON TO THE CONTENT!
7:15pm: My eyes open from my alarm. Back to sleep it is!
7:45: Weighing the cost/benefits from getting another 5 minutes of sleep in, I roll out of bed. Get dressed and head out the door.
8:30am: Arrive to the office and swipe through to the elevator. (There's this one Doorman? Receptionist? Security? dude who I've seemed to develop a rapport with and I always love tipping the hat with a nice "Good Morning" ^_^ to him. It's always nice to make friends.
8:35am: I make it to my office who I share with a fellow finance intern. An Australian intern. Who's always sure to greet me with a "morning mate".. I can't tell you how much that kind of greeting can brighten up your day. hehe. I plug in my laptop and check some emails. Finally! somebody got back to me on something I needed to complete my spreadsheet. I pop open excel and start grinding.
A few moments later....
Google search: How to use vlookup and sum together
Google search: How to maintain filtered data to keep output constant
What can I say! I'm here to learn, aren't I?
10am: Meeting with the manager to discuss some deliverables for the week. (We just had a meeting yesterday about some forecast data I built the week before)... He says that he likes my sheet and will use it to benchmark against some other data created by the project lead and another manager. At that point my eyes were O_O..... shit..... hope I didn't f$#% up. He asks me to do some ad hoc analysis on some stuff and take a stab and drafting some guidance that will be communicated to a few divisions for a transition the company is undergoing. Well... looks like I have stuff to do.
10:45am: After grabbing some coffee, made only by the finest (not me) it sit down to work on a couple reports. Apparently when I try to make coffee it comes out all diluted. Probably because I'm not used to using so much coffee in the machine. I'm still used to making coffee just for 1! I got 6 roomies in college and I'm the only one who drink coffee (like how's that possible? I suspect adderall haha)
Noon: It's time for lunch! The company has some pretty awesome cafeterias! The thing I always get, however, is this burrito that comes out to be about a foot long for $5.99. Spinach Tortilla. Carnitas. Cheese. Pico de Gallo. Sour Cream. Verde Sauce. Hot Sauce. Guac. Rolled up and grilled for that extra touch ;) We grab lunch with a few other interns in my cohort. Two weeks in and it's really beginning to feel like high school. I have about different three groups that I chill with during lunch depending on who's around.
And yes. We are just as multi cultural as this stock image of a "high school group".
12:45 - 1pm: I get back to the desk and start thinking about the exact language of this guidance draft I'm suppose to do. Like... do I make the voice sound super official? Or just point by point, fact by fact? I start reading the terms and conditions on eBay for inspiration.
2pm: Pretty much got the guidance finished, but writer's block. I'll come back to it tomorrow. I sooth my soul by opening up some more excel.
2:30pm: Forgot to email some folks about clarification that the manager asked for. Get that out of the way...
4:00pm: I'm hungry.
5:45pm: Alright, my master doc is pretty much done. Some of this excel stuff to make the document more "dynamic" or "easily editable" is straight up frustrating and google is helping only so much. I set up a meet with another manager who is so called company wide "excel god" to take some pointers from a true pro on Friday. Send off a few more emails for software access... and cross my fingers that I get access to SAP soon. It apparently took a recent hire a month for his access to be approved -_-.
6:00pm: Close up my laptop, accumulate my breakfast bar wrappers, and head out. It's pretty damn quite when I get out, but the sky is beautiful and traffic is alright. Gonna head back to gym, talk to friends, trade cypto, and game.
Nite!!!
