Why Do Men Cheat?

Two days ago, my girlfriends and I started this intense conversation about why men cheat. It took 4 hours of a loud conversation on a hot Sunday afternoon to arrive at these 4 conclusions as to why men cheat.
PS: This is not to say that women don't cheat. Cheating knows no sex. But for today, we are talking about men.

1. Just Because.
   Steve Harvey said in his book "Act like a lady, think like a man" that men cheat simply because they can. I agree. If you're like me and you sometimes offer no explanation for why things happen but simply accept them as a compulsory part of the universe then you would agree too. Sometimes there's no reason or back story, they cheat because they can cheat. There's always an opportunity to cheat, there's always a girl to cheat with and theres always a healthy sex drive. End of story.

2. Security.
   I once met a guy who had been in a steady relationship with a girl for at least 3 years. They were happy together or at least appeared to be. After a few months of being friends with this guy, he asked that we have a 'romp in the sheets'. I was puzzled and asked why he would want to throw away what he had with his girlfriend just to sleep with me. He laughed and told me that he wasn't throwing anything away, he simply wanted to have me with no strings attached . Some balls huh?
   Picture a cave man who enjoys the steady warmth and comfort of his cave. However being in his cave all the time can get boring or lonely. So he goes out for some adventure, knowing that whatever happens, he can always come back to his warm cave.
   The reality is that some men cheat on their partners because of the level of security their relationship has attained. Their partner is always going to be there with them, they've probably already made a life commitment to each other and this gives them enough confidence to seek sexual satisfaction outside their partners. But what if their partners find out? This leads me to the next reason why men cheat.

3. They believe they can get away with it.
   When I was a little girl, before I did anything wrong, I'd think to myself "what's the worst that could happen?. I convinced myself that my parents would never find out about what I did and even if they did, I could handle whatever punishment they gave me. The same thing applies to most men who cheat.
   A cheating spouse thinks he can get away with cheating. He believes his partner would never find out and even if she does, they'd work it out. Good enough.

4.Misplaced Emotions.
I must say, it hurts to be cheated on. But it hurts even more to know that the other girl in the picture is not just a mere fling.
This is the one we see a lot in the movies.

Boy has known girl for a really long time and they've grown to be good friends, always looking out for each other. However, boy meets 'new girl' with whom he is completely infatuated and starts to date her. The relationship with 'new girl' is great but Boy still spends time with 'old girl' and can't deny that he is drawn to her. One thing leads to another and Boy cheats on 'new girl' with 'old girl'. End of story. For real this time.
