Amazing how close you got to that turtle. Thats a rarity...they normaly bugger off...and everyone has this idea that turtles are slow...but they can move fast in these underwater dreamscapes!

I know right! The way I got so close was to settle to the bottom on to the sand gently and to the side of the turtle. Then use my fingers to creep along the sand forward very slowly until I was right in front of her. I just wish I had a better underwater camera but needs must! I recently snorkeled in Mexico in a place called akumal bay with green turtles and they were very flighty you're right they nearly always shoot off if you disturb their grazing.

Not the best scuba here in Lake Atitlan...though there are a few wrecks and pretty neat walls of mini vent volcanoes. If you ever find yourself in guatemala...look me up raj808. Actually there is an underwater city...but you can get heavy fines for scubaing there.

If I make it to guatemala it would be great to have a scuba buddy to hang with :) I have dived Cozumel in mexico and will be doing a blog post about that trip soon. Sunken city sounds fascinating!

i've been told it is possible to dive to the sunken city...but that you need to go through many permission hoops. i also talked to some one who did it...he said visually its not so great...kind like mud mounds and walls...but that you can fish around in the mud and find pottery and other artifacts.

Hey, if I ever make it over there I will see if I can get permissions ..... maybe the closest cities university might have archeology department that would help for divers to excavate for them. With artifacts going to a museum etc this would be more beneficial to Guatemala society. Although I would love to go treasure hunting in real life not if it means jail :-)

funny kwinky dink today. the exact guy that i know who has dove the underwater city came to the hostal today. he is a friend from guate city. i asked him more in depth. he said that there is way to much bureaucracy around doing the dive legit. but that he knows the exact spot and he has done several clandestine dives there. you just have to have the boat guy drive away and get in quick.
he also told me about these jungle senotes he goes diving in...said there some of his favorite here in guate...

Haha. Some call it a coincidence some synchronicity, whichever, it happens so much in life. Interesting that it's possible to do a cheeky dive with the help of a friendly local fisherman. I'm too much of a wimp for cave/cenote diving, to be honest. When I was in Mexico I went to a few and sneaked my dive fins in and just free-dived down to the bottom holding my breath and grabbing onto rocks to try and get pics from the bottom. Didn't get many good shots as my underwater camera broke on that trip 😡 This is about the best one:

Did not go anywhere where I couldn't see the surface, it just doesn't appeal to me. I get a little claustrophobic when scuba diving inside a wreck in the open ocean, so cave diving is definitely not for me. weird as I have dived with lots of different sharks, saw banded sea snake swimming in Thailand got right up to a Lion's Mane Jellyfish in UK waters. I only feel wonder not fear on all of these dive experiences but cave diving fills me with dread lol

yeah...i actually upvoted it last night...just didnt comment yet. I was learning about curie. I tried to submit just beneath the surface to curie...as it fit all the parameters of quality and time, and under upvoted. i understood that anyone could submit something to the curators...who would decide. turns out you cant even make a suggestion if not a curator.

That's a shame @onethousandwords it can take some people like that! It is a completely unnatural thing for us as humans to be breathing underwater so a panic reaction is completely understandable. I felt a few panic feelings when I was first learning but if they are very strong attacks you are best to be safe and leave the scuba diving. Maybe try snorkeling? Especially in any tropical reef environment you can see most of what you would see if diving from the surface. I will be posting lots more articles like this one so keep an eye out to live vicariously through my blogs and maybe give me a follow, the next one is going to be about diving with seals. Thanks for your comment I have followed you :)

Thanks for your comment and the follow. I just watched your 'Homestead rabbit processing graphic' post and also checked out a few of your other posts and I was impressed by the attitude that I witnessed about respect for the animals that you get food from as human predators! I feel I need to explain myself here - I have been a life long vegetarian but recently started eating fish, the reason I decided to eat fish was because of my connection with marine life, my respect and knowledge of marine ecosystems from diving! I caught fish spearfishing, I gutted what I'd caught and barbecued my dinner on the beach. As a long time vegetarian this was challenge for me emotionally but actually I have known for a long time that the only reason why I don't eat meat is because of the separation between the killing, processing - to the plate - of the average person. Tribal people understood that to kill was a give and take, to eat and enjoy that animals gift of nourishment required the respect to nurture the environment that provided for them and for the animal that nourished you! I think, in this modern age we as humans take a lot of what we eat for granted. If I ever eat a rabbit, or beef or lamb or any other animal I will be happy as long as I have been involved in the process of rearing, hunting or fishing that animal, taking part in the natural process of predator prey relationship. I try my best not to buy pre-processed supermarket farmed fish that has no place in any natural ecosystem. This may well be a naive view but it's just how I feel about these things. I'm glad you enjoyed the post, it was my first ever encounter with a green turtle and it astounded me at the time how huge but graceful a creature she was :) I followed you and look forward to your posts in the future

Hi there @raj808 ! You are so very right about respect. There is a major disconnect between people and food. It was made very clear to us a few years ago. You said you were a life long vegetarian and are just now eatting fish. We are also meat free. For about 6 1/2 years now we have been meat free. I (chad) have been vegan just this year. We aren't so much about the connection, but about how I feel. I really believe that we should eat responsibly. We raised rabbits for meat for others. It was a source of income for us, and a source of great meat for others locally. Thank you for your great feed back.

Hey @princeso Easiest way to get certified and learn all the knowledge you need to know to not endanger yourself is to do a PADI open water course. It does cost a bit of money, when I did it 7 years ago it was around £300 uk, It might be cheaper in different countries. However, training is essential as you need to know a lot of complex things, to do with nitrogen depletion in the blood stream, to stay safe. To put it as simply as I can, the deeper you go the more the air in your tank gets pressurized and the percentage of nitrogen to oxygen effects your body differently under pressure. If you do the PADI course you will learn all about this and how to dive safely to counteract the effects. Please don't let this put you off though, a good teacher will make it easy and after 5-10 dives the procedures will be second nature. Thanks for your you comment. Hi @beulahlandeu I'm fine thanks. Nice to meet you and i'm glad you enjoyed the blog post and thanks for the congratulations. I have followed you and have just been having a read through your posts. I particularly enjoyed 'Materialism, idealism and identity theory' philosophical stuff for sure and very interesting. I upvoted that post :) Yes, I always use the @Originalworks tag as I'm only really interested in writing entertaining but original stories/poems/blogs, it is nice that there is a group that rewards us for putting hard work and effort into our steemit articles. Too many people I have noticed plagiarizing things on here, that's not my style. I shall be posting another scuba related adventure up on here soon so look out for that :-)

Hi @zararina. All of these Scuba Scribe posts so far are from prior diving trips. I have written them from memory as I have lots more recent ones but want to make a long series to entertain all the undersea enthusiasts. I made the trip to dive with the seals 4 years ago, but I have the video and a poem I wrote about the experience which help me spark the memories 🚤 :)

Thanks @boydman I'm glad I could help you get a glimpse into the undersea world. That is really what my Scuba Scribe series is all about, I want to maybe inspire some to take up diving and those who find it too scary give them an idea of what it's like.
