I didn't carry a gun while living in Mexico. Almost nobody did, legally or otherwise. One benefit to being back in the US is that I can carry a firearm to protect myself and my family again. I am carrying my Glock model 27, a sub-compact pistol in .40S&W. It's the first handgun I ever bought, and I've owned it for more than a decade.
You might notice some customization. Years ago, I stippled the grip with a woodburning tool, polished the barrel with a Dremel tool, added an extended magazine release and extended slide release, heated and remolded the back of the grip a little, and added white nail polish to the recessed letters and numbers that are machined into the slide. If I were to do it again, I might skip a couple of those things. :)
I also added XS Big Dot sights, which are absolutely amazing for quickly getting a shot on target.
My favorite holster ever is the Comp-Tac MTAC leather/Kydex hybrid holster. I like the secure snap/click you get with the molded fit of a Kydex holster, but I prefer the softness of leather against my skin. Made of half leather and half Kydex, this holster is the best of both worlds!

If you want to protect your family, get rid of the gun. It's statistically much more dangerous to have a gun in the house. Children get their hands on them and shoot themselves or others, couples quarrel and one of them grabs the gun in rage, etc. If you think you need a gun in the US, it's anyway a shitty country, and you need to get out. I live in Sweden, and nobody has a gun here, it's a very safe country.
