For some years we've had a New Zealand Book Month to highlight and celebrate great kiwi literature in schools, but its never been an 'official' observance, and there wasn't one planned for this year that I could find evidence of.
Despite this, and in honour of the art, I've taken the initiative to highlight some of my favourites throughout August.
So I'd like to present author one ...

Emily Gee

Emily is the daughter of another famous kiwi author - Maurice Gee - although they write quite different stories. Emily's novels are based around fantasy, and Regency-era romance, and she is known for her period-accurate detail.
There has been much written about her and her work in interviews, which you can Google for, and read online, so I won't rehash them here.
I will point out, though, that if you enjoy a bit of history, following her posts (as Emily Larkin) on FB will reward you with her doses of Regency slang - they are very enlightening. (Now I know what pucker water is, I can never unknow it again! Work it into conversations with your friends.)

Her books have consistently rated very well on both Amazon and Goodreads (possibly other places too, but I am not familiar with them). I find it refreshing that great NZ authors do not feel they have to centre their work around characters living here, but can hold their own in any world they create.
As Emily Gee, she's published stories such as:
Thief-With-No-Shadow.jpg and laurentine-spy.jpg
and her Cursed Kingdoms trilogy:

all images
As Emily Larkin she's published more prolifically so I won't list them all, but here is a taster:

You should be able to download a free digital copy of this wonderful book via Amazon kindle. If you enjoy historical romance, and magic then you are sure to be very entertained by this story.

This is such a cool idea. I just got myself a library card yesterday so will be sure to look out for her!

Well that seems like very good timing. :)

Very interesting. Not sure Emily's books would be to my liking but good to see there is more to New Zealand than the All Blacks :) PS I got to see both the men's and women's team play in the Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco

lol for many people there will never be anything more than the All Blacks ;)

I hope the teams did us proud at the Sevens!

I think this is a brilliant idea! I like to celebrate NZ Music Month in May every year, so why not have an NZ Book Month as well! My wife has often attended the Auckland Writers Festival in the past, and sometimes I tag along with her. 😉

I can't say I have read any of Emily Gee's works, but I certainly know of her father. I was a huge fan of the original television series of his story Under The Mountain  back in the 80's, and, of course, I read the book back then too. Thank you for introducing me to Emily Gee though. The books she has penned in her own name look to be more my type of thing. I'll have to look her up in my local library!

Wonderful! This is what it is intended to do - highlight authors people might not be aware of. :)

I'm pretty sure I must have watched Under the Mountain when it came out, but I don't think I've read any of his work.

Some of us kiwis did a big NZ Music Month post blitz, which we will likely do again next May so you'll be able to join in then.
