It's probably a bit of a misnomer to call any of the tracks from El Michels Affair's Return To The 37th Chamber covers. "Funky reinterpretations" is a lot more apt of a description. And while I still haven't heard the album in full yet, I've been consistently impressed by the tracks I have heard so far, and this new 7 inch single featuring reworkings of "Shadow Boxin" and "Iron Maiden" are about the best tracks I've heard yet. "Shadow Boxin" captures the subtle, subdued menace of the original perfectly, while Iron Maiden has the same woozy, gritty horn-laden blaxploitation feel of Ghostface's classic as well. But where the tracks really shine is when they divert a bit from the source material and the El Michel's and co. add their own flair and flavor to these classic RZA productions. It's honestly just a tasteful balance of homage and creativity that make these tracks such a joy to listen to.

You can pre-order this 7" over at Big Crown Records if you're a 45 freak like myself, or grab the full LP which is out now!
