Trash Dove Is Taking Over Facebook

in blog •  8 years ago  (edited)

If you visited Facebook in the last week, you probably saw a gif of a purple pigeon appearing on a huge number of comments and in groups. It seems that the Trash Dove has become the perfect comment on absolutely any subject on Facebook. Some people like it and some people can't stand it, splitting the community's opinions.
In order to understand this phenomenon, we need to understand its origins. The Trash Dove was created in September by illustrator Syd Weiler, an Adobe creative resident.
“Facebook asked to put them on the site last month. But I didn’t expect anything like this. I woke up on Thursday … I think, and everyone had tagged me in the joke videos. It was surreal.”

The joke video Weiler is talking about came from Thailand, where his Trash Dove became an overnight viral sensation. The video shows a kitten beside the Trash Dove dancing together. It got a staggering 3.7 million views in just 5 days. In Thailand they have a joke involving the word nok, meaning “someone hopelessly single or suffering from unrequited love.” Looking at the bird as he flaps his neck the joke makes some sense.

Here is the video that started it all.

As with everything that goes viral over the web, the internet started to respond and now you can see him in a legion of memes, photoshopped images, and countless other forms. Nevertheless, the bird also is pissing off a lot of people because it's just pointless watching or posting it on every comment.

Fortunately, there's no way this bird can take over Steemit. Despite all the autovoting and bots people still socialize and write real commentary here.
