Fetal circulation: the fetal blood flows to and from placenta at the attachment of the umbilical cord fetal deoxygenated blood flows to the placenta to umbilical pathway the vessel course through the chorionic plate and larger stem villi they festooned into small free floating finely branched villi the vessels follow the branching villi which become smaller and smaller and end in smaller terminal villi containing only a capillary network blood with significantly higher oxygen content return from the placenta to the fetus through a single umbilical groove
