Why women do not study engineering? Here are two reasons

in blog •  6 years ago

Today was my first day of the fourth semester
I must say it was strangely good, although it was a long day, although during two classes I realized that there was something strange

Not only because of all the problems that the country is going through, as a result of which many colleagues have not been able to pay for college or have left the country looking for a better future

No, today in class something happened that can happen in any country in the world and the truth is very disappointing

We are in a catholic university and that has the idea of being progressive and eliminate any type of macho or racist behavior

However today two things happened

I study industrial engineering, a career that I love and I think that is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

Today I had my first class of rational mechanics
Only the name is a little scary.

I sat next to my classmates and friends to wait for the teacher to arrive

I noticed a phenomenon that had been mentioned to me that was happening, but it made me feel scared

Of the 40 students who were in the room, approximately only 10 were women

First shock of the day, I felt strange, then I realized that I was upset

Because of all existing gender roles, women decide to work in more humanistic professions

While men are left science

The second shock came after

Everything got worse when the teacher started teaching

He is a very bright man and it shows that he knows his subject but teaches based on abuse and bullying

The teacher began to ask everyone different things said in the class
I was next to my best friend during the whole class and we were copying what he said and paying attention to the class

When he asked me, I honestly did not know the answer and because I was in this scrutiny I got a little nervous that he confused me with something else

I wonder
Ah, are you a companion of him?

Pointing to my best friend

I sat up straight and I said no, I was a student, but he looked me up and down and said "Ah"

And he continued to teach his class

However, during the rest of the class I can not stop talking about how women, because they are nice things, should not say rude things that looked ugly

And when we asked why if they did, it would not look ugly, he simply replied that this was a thing of the past that now only needed to be understood.

I do not know if I'm exaggerating but personally I think that the teacher, no matter how brilliant, does not have the right to treat the few women in the room like that.

However no one complained explicitly because he is the only teacher who gives the subject and we are not sure that the school will support us in the penalty of brilliant macho

So I guess I'll have to survive a semester with this teacher
