The Frustration Of A Bad ISP: My Lamentation!

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

There's an issue where I live.

We have 2 options for Internet Service Providers (ISP):

  1. Charter, which wants an exorbitant amount of money per month and a 3 year contract
  2. Frontier, which has inexpensive month-to-month rates but SUCKS BALLS!

We have Frontier because a 3 year contract is impossible seeing as we will likely be moving in the near future.

however...

So... I'll be Steeming along, doing my thing, trying to hustle and build a network. When suddenly... things stop working. I see the little spinny wheel on all of my tabs. My YouTube video is interrupted.

So I open up Facebook to check if the connection is really dead (which is the only thing I seem to use Facebook for anymore, lets face it).

And THIS!

I HATE this.

I hate that little paper with the folded edge and the frowny face.

I hate that little dinosaur thing.

I HATE HAVING TO RESET MY MODEM 5 TIMES EVERY DAMN DAY!

That's not even a joke: I've reset the thing 4 times already today and it's not even noon yet. :(

What does Frontier say?

I have called them before.

I've been on their chat box, telling them what's wrong.

The usual response?

This is a known issue and we're in the process of fixing it.

LIES!

Ugh!

Do you have any similar horror stories about terrible ISPs?

Honestly, it almost makes me feel like a prisoner in my own house, because my livelihood is dependent on the Internet, and the Internet has become a utility in modern life almost as important as water or or roads.

Fuck Frontier!!!

I know the struggle. My ISP is Verizon and I'm currently steeming @ 128Kbps (VERY SLOW). This is partly due to the fact that I refuse to sign any contracts and have no other options.

I have the same problem but my is do to the lack of not having a proper router, Mine ended up smoking it scared the hell out of me then i looked it up and every one had the same problems . when i go to check my speed it doesnt even pop up lol.

ooooohhhh man... been chatting with them just now. Post forthcoming.

I have same problem
Sir do you remember me??
Now i am your huge follower & Fan

I live in a small desert town where there are two available providers as well. Unfortunately one is satellite so that's a no go. The other one is run by the electric company. Lol. So the whole town practically uses the same provider. It is terrible some days. I feel your pain brother. And at the same time am sorry for your internet endeavors. I hope it gets better man! Just remember it could be worse. You could have to rely on phone service for internet hot spot. Lol

I'm thinking of just going to unlimited data for my phone and linking my computer into that. lol, might end up being cheaper overall and more reliable.

If you have a good phone service area it might definitely be worth it. I know my house is spotty so its a no go for me unfortunately. :( But if you decide to go with that I hope it works out for you brother. I used to do that when I lived in NY though. It was like having my own private internet that no one else could have. Lol.

I live in los angeles and somehow we have the same issue... you'd think in a city this big we'd have lots of options. I have to get my internet from Time Warner Cable and my TV from DirecTV because each of them can only figure out how to do one thing well...

lol
I don't even have TV. Haven't for years. What's the point when the Internet can get you everything on demand?

I've thought many times about switching it off, and probably will now that many providers are getting close to being able to provide in one package what I need: live sports and premium cable channels (I work @ a major studio in Hollywood so need need need these to stay in the game :))

I've been thinking about getting a Verizon MiFi box to go around the limited options in Western Washington. It looks like a good option if you use less than 22 GB a month (their new unlimited plan).

I honestly think that this is the future. The more decentralized we can make the internet, the better.

I just buy hot spots when I have problem with internet it annoys the shit out of me lol pardon my French haha
I feel your frustrations haha

No I totally get it.

This bastard has cut out 6 times today now...

I had that problem last week, come to find out someone put a low pass filter on my box outside, in the mean time spent 100's on boost air cards lol

here in Nigeria, those that are cheap are not worth writing about, and those that are relatively high in price are always trusted...so we are used to it.

I feel your pain. I used to have Verizon FIOS. It was amazing at the time with 50Mbps up and down with no problems. Then Frontier took over and everything turned to shit with their connection and their customer service. Then I moved and got Time Warner Cable and got 200Mbps down for only $35 a month and everything was great. Then Charter came along and said no more 200Mbps for you. Our max speed is 100Mbps and you have to pay more. I can only pray when Google Fiber becomes available in my area but it looks like it ain't happening anytime soon.

There's a reason Frontier is so cheap. If you want reliability, bite the bullet and switch to charter.
