It is better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.
YOLO stands for You Only Live Once, a very popular quote used by millennials or youngsters. Millennials are said to be those born in the early 21st century forward. Basically, this is the generation where technology has boomed globally in terms of communication and gadgets.
YOLO is about trying things outthat you haven’t done before. It is doing what makes you happy or satisfies your cravings regardless of the risk it can do to you. Being adventurous is a very good example for this quote. You try to skydive to experience the flight yet your life can be at risk but because you believe in YOLO so you still do it. This quote is somehow related to the Latin phrase “Carpe diem” or seize the moment.
”Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero” translates to "Seize the day, put very little trust in tomorrow (the future)" . This statement was first coined by Horace, a roman lyric poet in late centuries. But do not be confused. They may look similar but it has a very thin line that separates these two ---- It is being responsible for your actions.
This is a personalized dogtag I ordered for myself. I pretty much believe in this statement and this always reminded me that I should seize the moment.
Please don’t get me wrong as I don’t see anything wrong with YOLO, it is indeed true that you only live once as the idiom goes “strike whilst the iron is hot”, do it now or never. But often times these same letters justifies our impulsive decisions. We sometimes use it as an excuse to our decisions because “you’ll die anyway so why shoukd I bother” kind of thinking.
So, for me, here now draws the thin line between the two.YOLO is doing things that make you happy regardless of the outcome even if it reciprocates a negative outcome. Sometimes it goes unplanned too. For example, you ordered an item online which costs 2x your monthly salary but since YOLO you ordered it still without thinking the negative implication of what will happen afterwards.
On the other hand, Carpe diem says that we should just put lesser trust in the future because what matters most is today, what you can do today. If you make the most out of this day you need not worry for your future because you have thought it well today, you planned for it already. It shows more practicality and a more positive attitude.
These are just my thoughts and how I see things. I do have pieces of advice thoughbefore you try anything else. First, think about it like a thousand times if you really like it. Then ask yourself if it would be beneficial for you especially on the long run, and lastly weigh your pros and cons before pressing that button.
Always remember that good decisions beget good opportunities so be mindful of what you choose in life because YOLO.
