Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 05/23/18> I about lost it with KLBJ 590 AM on Tuesday…

in blog •  6 years ago  (edited)

I have to believe the people running the radio station in Austin do things with their programming just to piss me off. This has been going on now for a few years but Tuesday I think set a new mark for the most uniformed remark a talk show host could have made.

To give you a little background on KLBJ 590 AM it is the local AM station in Austin that has the best traffic reports, and quite honestly, that is how I judge the radio stations. So over the last ten years when I am in the Austin area that is the station I listen too. While traffic was the main reason I couldn’t help but get drawn in to the programming and the different hosts of those programs as well. Some of you might remember last fall when I told you about the host of the one hour program that came on right after the Rush Limbaugh show, Dale Dudley was his name.

The guy was pretty much a liberal and he got on my nerves pretty well as he would bash Rush left and right. I had been a listener of Rush for quite a number of years, all my fingers and toes wouldn’t be enough to count all the years. Rather than switch stations for that one hour, and lose the traffic reports, I endured his bashing and all of his many personal issues he was battling; and he had plenty of those. I have to say though that old Dale taught this old man a lesson and while I was a big fan of Rush, I didn’t realize just how much of what Rush was saying was just flat wrong. I learned a whole bunch from Dale on confirmation bias and that was just the beginning of my appreciation for him.

Well, KLBJ590 AM fired him a few months back from the one hour AM program, he still does a morning FM show on the KLBJ FM station, and he’s been doing that gig for 30 years. I was actually really disappointed they canned him, he brought some balance to the station in his own sort of way. So in the interim they had some other folks working that one hour segment. Usually there would be two people co-hosting and one of the more regular of the twosome was the girl who does the traffic.

The station manager also decided he wanted a piece of the “on the action” so just recently they made it official that the team and the show was the “Mark and Melinda Show”. Not only do they have the 2 to 3 time slot but they also have the 10 to 11 AM slot as well. Mark seems to be pretty in tune to things, kind of a drab voice, but he seems pretty knowledgeable as far as current events and the pulse of the area. Melinda, on the other hand, is best for looking at a traffic map and telling you where the accidents and tie ups are, the girl is lost otherwise in my opinion.

Tuesday Melinda made a comment that just about caused me to wreck my truck; I couldn’t believe just how clueless she was on the subject she was talking about. With the recent school shooting here in Texas the airwaves have been full of debate about guns, metal detectors, new laws and whatever else can be done to help prevent another school shooting incident.

Somehow Melinda tried to make a correlation of the school shootings and guns to the Branch Davidians siege near Waco, Texas in 1993. I don’t know how she was trying to make that correlation, and neither did her co-host Mark. That wasn’t even the thing that made me almost lose control of the steering wheel as she was trying to explain herself. I think what she was trying to get at was that these school shooters ever since Columbine are almost like being a part of a cult, like the Branch Davidians were who followed David Koresh their leader. That’s a pretty big stretch to come up with that but that isn’t even the good part.

Melinda said that these kids doing the shootings should realize that it didn’t work out well for the Branch Davidians, since they all drank the Kool Aide and died. Excuse me, what did you say? Even Mark said to her, that the Davidians died in the fire that consumed their compound, and he was correct. Well, Miss Melinda evidently knows some things that we don’t because she responded, that “Yes, they did die in the fire, but that was after they drank the poison Kool Aid” and at which point I had to swerve back onto the road.

From what I can gather from listening, I am not sure this Melinda was even alive in 1993 when the Waco siege happened. I would also be willing to bet all I have that she wasn’t alive in 1978 when the 900 or so members of Jim Jones congregation drank the poison Kool Aid in Jonestown, Guyana. I don’t know how she managed to screw the pooch with those two events by combining them, but she did.

Well luckily it just happened to be time for a commercial break, and it was a pretty lengthy one at that, when they did come back from the break the whole topic had changed to a guy up in New York whose parents took him to court to have him evicted from their home. No other mention was made of school shootings, Branch Davidians or Kool Aid.

I would have liked to been a fly on the wall during the meeting after the show, I am pretty sure that there had to be one, since Mark is the program manager for the station. I can see her home work assignment for this evening, research and write a paper on the Waco siege and for Wednesday night it will be Jim Jones and Guyana Punch. Mark made the decision to make her a radio personality and if he were smart he would unmake her just as fast and have her just reading the traffic reports.

Hey Mark, I think Dale still has his afternoons open; you might want to give him a call.

Until next time,

I was alive in 1993 when Waco happened. I remember where I was when I heard the assault on the compound had started. I was also alive in 1978 when Guyana happened. I don't think I'd ever get those two tragedies mixed up.

It is a bit of a stretch to see a common thread in the underlying mentality between those events and the endless parade of school shootings that make headlines every few months in this country. The one I see (frankly) is the decision that anything -- even fiery death and suicide -- is better than continuing with "life as it is." In that perspective is anger and despair and the odd choice to "take some people with them" from the leaders / shooters / those with influence and control.

I consider myself one of those godless liberals that make Rush and folks on his side of the aisle break out in hives. But even I can say that the answer to the problem isn't another law we can't enforce or more government regulation of a problem that will just grow stronger and go underground if we try that route again.

Look at what happened to "the war on drugs." That didn't make drugs harder to get -- or the drug issue less prevalent. It created a massive social problem with many facets that we are eventually going to have to confront with tactics more enlightened and effective than what we've tried so far.

We're going to have to deal with causes not "means." That will be a whole lot harder than passing another law -- which is why it hasn't happened yet. I have no desire at all to shoot myself full of illegal (or even LEGAL) drugs to compensate for -- let alone try to deal with -- the frustration, depression and patent injustices that have simply become part of life. (How on earth does rendering yourself ill or stoned or comatose or worse help anything???) What's the difference between me and a junkie? There has to be an answer more revealing than simply "free will" or "character."

We also have to deal with our horrifying, pathetic cultural love affair with injury, war and violence as a means to "solve problems." We are never going to kill our way to safety and peace -- not at home, nor abroad. Glamorizing it ... serving this up as "entertainment" -- teaching kids by video instruction and example "Got a gripe? Get a gun!!" has got to be understood as the psychological poison it is.

There are loose threads connecting all this -- running also through how we perceive ourselves as a nation, how we view other people, how we are able to relate individually one to another, how we each feel we can impact and improve our own lives.

I don't have all the answers and I certainly don't have time to write them here if I did. But we need to be looking at remedies besides more legislation ... and we stand a lot better chance of finding those threads and devising those answers if we come out of tunnel-vision ... and try.

I am quickly becoming of the mind set that government officials rely on making laws strictly for the financial benefit of the government. Plus it allows the law makers to sell the perception that they are "working hard" to solve the situation.
I have come to find out since that day Melinda made those comments that she is 33, so she would have been 8 or 9 when Waco took place. Seeing that Koresh and Jones both had religious cults, I vaguely remember that a couple references were made during the Waco event about other religious cults so maybe that is where her confusion stems from. I wouldn't trust my memories from when I was eight if I were a radio talk show host some 25 years later, unless whatever I was recalling actually happened to me.
Hopefully she learned a valuable lesson.
I wish you had more time to write your answers, you said you don't have all the answers, but it only takes the one good one to fix any problem.

You should start using Waze. Then you can experience freedom of programs and don’t depend on the traffic reports anymore! :D

I have had other people tell me that as well, but I am old school for the most part, and I do enjoy listening to the talk shows for the most part. Thanks for the suggestion , I might just give it a try some day.
Thanks for stopping in and dropping a reply.

Assuming that you have an AM receiver in your car, and don’t rely on a phone app for that, Waze’s constant rerouting via faster paths when it discovers high and slow traffic on your itinerary will set you complete free from traffic reports.

As such you will enjoy the freedom of choosing the channel because of the actual/current programming rather than have to take talk shows you may not always enjoy because of the host but listen to for the traffic reports.

The beauty with Waze is that it is aware of the actual traffic situation (whenever possible it falls back on the automatically gathered data by its users rather than on traffic APIs - when you use Waze it adds your driving conditions to the actual situation, it’s entirely peer-reported as such) and will constantly look for a faster itinerary. So you don’t have to mind the traffic reports anymore, unless you like knowing what routes are stuck of course. I know there’s people who love to have that bird’s eye view.

Moral of the story, don't hire air-heads for anything more than what they are capable of. This showcases a lack of education, knowledge and research. I would assume the hosts know what they are going to talk about on air and not fly by the seat of their pants.

Yes, that is one way of putting it for sure. Since the hosts lead the topics you would believe they would know what they are going to talk about. It seems like this pair don't bring topics that they have researched but more look at the "current news sheet" and just go with that and hope they know enough about it. Just like the parents taking the son to court to evict him, that was on the news cast at the 2:00 hour right before that program started that day, so you can pretty much figure that they didn't know any more than anyone else who heard the news cast. Surely no time to do any research on that subject.

Okay, I really didn't want to laugh while reading this because it was about a touchy subject on the school shootings but what in the world. If I didn't know exactly what I was talking about, going on air would be the last place for me to try and explain something like that. Hopefully they do keep her looking at the traffic map because I am sure they were not to happy with her during break, lol!

She can't hardly screw up the traffic, it is always screwed up in Austin so no one would know the difference.
