Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 06/04/18 > Better late than never…. so this one is late …

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

Normally these daily doses get on the platform around 10 to 11PM central time here is the USA, but not this one, I am good twelve hours late by my standards. Mother Nature decided to pay a visit on Sunday evening to put her screws to me and the rest of the clan.
Just right before 9:00PM Sunday night a pulled my laptop out and decided to get started on this and just about that time Mother Nature showed up as well. It had been a beautiful day on Sunday so I was highly surprised when the wind whipped up to about 50MPH and the rain and lightning started. About 5 minutes into this storm we lost power momentarily, and it came right back on, this happened a couple more times and the finally the power went off for good.
It was quite a storm and power was out for the entire area according to reports on the radio and the facebook site the wife looks at for our community. She said according to her sources on FB we would be without power for at least couple hours. So without power and internet I said, “good enough, I am going to get some sleep while the house is still cool.”
When I woke up this morning at 5:30 we still had no power. When I called the power company they said power had been restored to our area at 10:22PM, well maybe to our area, but not to our house I told her. So she checked and with this “smart meter” system she was able to see that we had no power. So she said she would dispatch a service crew to check it out, should be about 2 hours max time.
Shortly after 6:00 AM I went outside to look around and discovered the problem.

Do you know what the problem is with big old oak trees? I’ll tell you, they are big and old, that is the problem. Also they grow taller than the height of the power lines, so when Mother Nature whipped up storm she claimed one of those old oak trees which then decided to claim the power line drop that serves our house. I called back to the power company to inform them of the situation. I was hoping that downed lines might prompt a faster response but evidently that is not the case, it is 10:15 and the power company has just pulled into our place. The power man said that he will have to get additional trucks and men to run new lines, should be about three more hours. Well, I can only hope, because I didn’t need to start my week like this, and I need some coffee, internet and a shower. All of which can’t happen without the electricity. In fact McDonalds has two of three so this is being typed and sent courtesy of them, and if I start feeling really desperate the sink in the men’s room just might serve as a shower.

Until next time,

Yikes, at trees taking down power. The fun part is that with phones and backup portable batteries there's a Facebook to tune into. Radio? Flashlight? Hmm nah, just the phone will do. Maybe.

What is Facebook? I can't remember that except on Sept. 11th each year. I like the local news / radio station for weather reports they are usually on top of the weather related stuff, at least here in the Houston area. I still have plenty of flashlights around, never have downloaded that flash light app to my phone yet. I heard there was something about it that made me leery of it, but just can't recall it at the moment.

I am glad the storm wasn't any worse. But it does serve to remind us all how much we depend on our electricity.

We may be feeling the effects on Wednesday. The people here have decided that in order to show the government they mean business, they will be holding a national strike. The government in its infinite wisdom has retaliated and will cut power, water and communications. This will effectively cut off the country to the outside world. This is terrifying. What atrocities will happen that the world will never know about?

Well I hate that your government has that mentality, I will continue to pray for you and your family that you make it through without injury or worse.
There comes a point where there is no turning back and it sounds like that point is about to come to bear fruit. As long as some survive, the stories will be told, just not at the moment they happen.

We are determined for the stories to get out. I would hate to think that all those innocent people died for nothing, only to be forgotten. Thank you for your prayers. We can use everyone thoughts and prayers now. Only the Creator will be able to fix this mess.

You are most welcome gal. Peace be with you.

It is frustrating when we lose power, as we've become dependent on it for so many things. There are numerous areas of the world that only have electricity for a few hours each day, yet we take it for granted. I know one fellow here on Steemit that told me they have about nine hours of electricity per day, maximum; imagine the planning required for such a daily situation! GOOD LUCK getting back into the groove soon!

Thanks Tiffany. I think if you could plan on it, 9 hours a day, it might not be that bad, as long as you got the nine hours when you are awake, otherwise all you would do is maybe charge some phones or batteries while you sleep and make ice cubes if you had a freezer.

Hate to hear that a beautiful tree snapped. And sorry that it impacted you and your family. Always tough when we lose some of our conveniences.

Hope everything will be fixed soon and that you will be able to return to your normal routine.

I don't believe I said it was beautiful, I said big and old, but it had seen it's better days before Sunday evening. Now the work will be cutting it up and burning it, so all the environmentalists can make me a target.
All is back to normal so it is fine now.
Thanks for stopping by and engaging with us today, very much appreciated.

Harsh story, but I am glad that everyone got out of it okay at least.

We actually had quite a few storms here in my area as well. None of which caused any black outs, godbless. It has been flooding like crazy though. Depending on where you were, water was at least knee deep.

I don't mind storms, but I do hope that it will remain calm for a while now. Property damage gets a bit excessive at this point.

Any idea where you can grab a shower meanwhile?

The power came back on at 1:00 and it didn't take long for me to hit the shower. The hot water heater is pretty quick on getting it up to temperature.
Where abouts you live? I haven't paid attention to where there is flooding going on except up around Baltimore.

I live in germany. In the area I live in, actual weather related flooding is hardly if ever a topic, so this came pretty suprising for everyone.

I would have never placed you as being from Germany, but I have misplaced many things over the course of my life so that shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone.
You said DC recommended you come by and visit me, just where did he mention that ? Was it on a post of your's or one of his?
I have taken the time to actually read all your posts, but I haven't yet commented as I have been trying to play catch up right now.
I could see how he would make the suggestion, we have some real similar style and view points, the difference is about 40 years of perspective.
We need to visit in discord and chat about some things. I don't know that I would make a good mentor for you, but the price is affordable, $0.00.
Way less than those three digit programs you mentioned in the life coaches and self help post.
You write in English very well even though that isn't your first language, that impresses me very much.
I am not sure what the requirements are now for a group I belong to called @thesteemengine but that is where I hang out on discord, so come over there when you get a chance or just direct message on discord.
While you are at @thesteemengine look around and meet some folks, we are about engaging people through comments and I know you would be a great addition should you qualify to join the group.
I will get back over and make some replies and some votes on your posts, I enjoyed reading them, but my voting power is stretched at the moment. Not that my vote is worth a whole hell of lot with the price of steem where it is.

I think it was one of his, yesterday.

I will follow and join the group you mentioned, looking forward to meeting new people.

Groups can be good or bad depending on how you approach it, but I gather you are in this for the long haul and if that is the case groups can open up plenty of avenues of opportunities and ideas.

I just filled out the application form and actually send you a PM there. Now I have to make this steemvoter thing work.

Good, you will be a great addition if you qualify, if not now for sure at some point. I am going to go see if Cw has had time to look at your application.

Ahhhh, man. I hate when that happens.

Mickey D's is a routine stop for me when I am travelling for 2 of the same 3 reasons. Coffee and Wifi. Starbucks too, but to my mouth and wallet the McDs coffee is just fine.

Well, here's hoping you come out of this better than the Oak. I'm pretty sure you will.

There will be some good evening fires this summer with that tree once I get it cut up. I just can't get my day started without a fresh cup and hot shower, it was like I didn't even wake up until after i got out of the shower at 1:45 in the afternoon.
Micky D's is good for coffee and the internet and I frequent it as well when I am on the road for those exact things.
I don't do Starfucks, they just don't appeal to me, I'm not a latte, frappe, cappuccino guy. Hot and black, thank you.

Wow, between the storm and the old oak mother nature really did take control. Glad to hear you managed to get your steemit fix in the local McDonalds

In fact McDonalds has two of three so this is being typed and sent courtesy of them, and if I start feeling really desperate the sink in the men’s room just might serve as a shower.

Ha ha, I've had a sink bath a few times when I was travelling. Face, hands, pits and then hands again. That's prob TMI but what the hell ;-)

Hell, we are all friends here, never TMI when it comes to being in a desperate situation, we might have given some survival tips that someone may find helpful in the future.

OH no! Hope you get your power back on soon!
We have lots of those big old oaks, and while they occasionally drop a branch or two, we have yet to have them take out our power...

Back when Hurricane... I think matthew? came through, we lost power for several days and we learned to make coffee over a campfire and wash up in water in buckets from a hand pump outside. It was fun... in a way, but I'd rather not do it again.

Hope they hurry it up and fix it for ya!

The power ended up being off for 16 hours, that is longer than the last two hurricanes combined for us, we have been fortunate on those, Ike and Harvey, so it was a big surprise that this thunder storm took us out.

Glad its back on! I bet that shower felt awesome! :D

It felt great, I can sure tell you that.
