Filing for our tax exemptions

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today we filed our tax exemptions

We couldn't file for them till March first. But we got so busy we didn't find the time till today to go file them. Besides the tax abatement we got we had to file for our homestead and mortgage exemptions.

They are working on the county building

So the offices are spread out through out the city. Thankfully it didn't take too long to find where they moved the Auditor's office. They are the ones that bill you for your taxes so that is where you go for the exemptions.

Once we were done we had to memorialize it

It is a big deal for us as it would be for anyone building a house. To get our tax breaks helps a lot with all the unexpected expenses building a home has. Cause even the best laid plans can not always cover everything. The best surprise we have had in this was getting a 6 year tax abatement when we were only expecting 3 years.

If you are building

Before you pull permits check with your economic development office. You may find they offer tax abatements for new builds. The catch is you have to apply before pulling permits. So check into it worse thing that can happen is they don't offer them in your area. Best thing it could save you thousands.

Thanks for passing along the tip!

Most places won't tell you. Our city was helpful in letting us know and said these abatements are offered all over the country. I had heard of them for businesses but not for residental. I was happy to find this information out. So naturally I have to pass the information along.
We did have to go to an economic meeting then a city one but it was well worth the time and effort.
