Dishwashing 101 at 10 Years Old

A life lesson you can teach to your kids ...

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm constantly in search of great food, fun, and adventure! My little "apples" didn't fall far from the tree, because my kids love to party as much as I do. However, there is another side to the coin ... the cleanup! When you teach them early, it pays off later.

In our family, when a child turns 10 years old, they start to wash the dishes. It's kind of a "rite of passage" tradition at our house. I place the stepstool in front of the sink and teach them basic dishwashing, then we advance to pots and pans. After they master "roughing it," I show them how to use the dishwasher properly. For about 2 weeks, be sure to have patience, a set of dry clothes, and a mop close by!

Our teenage neighbor was over one day and spilled maple syrup all over the kitchen floor. She grabbed my clean dish towel, hanging on the oven door handle (for drying clean dishes, of course), and a bottle of Windex! I caught her in the nick of time to swap out paper towels and multipurpose cleaner. It wasn't her fault ... her parents just never taught her how to clean the kitchen.

Don't stop at cleaning the kitchen ... move on to the bathroom. Teach kids to be careful with chemical cleaning products.

In this bitter economy, I'll show you how to make life sweet right at home.
