On the project I am on now they have the new Holy Grale "Splunk". Although, management has decided that the whole company has to connect to Splunk.
What is Splunk
Splunk is a system which can collect all kind of information from all kinds of systems in a enterprise environment.
It is mostly used as a logging environment (I am no expert but that it what I see it does). When systems centrally store their logging, administrators are able to analyze the logging tobe able to solve problems, to monitor the environment etc.
My experience so far
Like in many organisations descisions are made trough management without hearing to much the opinion of the administrators (which I am not by the way), the people that has to work with those tools.
In case of Splunk all departements have to connect to splunk and stuff ALL their logging into Splunk. With thousands of systems you can imagine that the amount of data is huge....huge and even huger... If you don't think very good about the purpose of all that information and what you want to do with it the risk exists that there is so many data which you can't even structure any more.... And that is exactly what's happening overhere. To much logging, to little thought about where they want to use it for...
The only one who is enjoying him or herself is Splunk, they are billing a lot of licenses (per gb) for data of which I dare to say is not even used at the moment... I do think that is mis-management....
So if you are tired of Steem you can always try to sell some shitty implementation of a product to some managers... Success guaranteed :)

Have a great day

That is pretty funny. So is it just grabbing log files from hardware or is it logging the work that people do on a project and stuff like that too? I have seen some tools in the past that aggregate log files from a variety of devices like switches/servers/etc. but those are usually to make it easier to sift through the information, not harder. It is amazing what management will go all-in on sometimes without contacting the end users.

It is indeed pushing (a forwarder) logfiles to the system also for aggregation, analytics and stuff. When it is well used you can really benefit from it, but just dump a lot of information to a vault won't do the job :)
