Adapting Keto

in blogpost •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi this is Rain.

Sprung from both diabetic parents, Dan and I, were caught in quite a dilemma sometime in May after our laboratory results were released. He was diagnosed to be diabetic and myself, prediabetic.

A Filipina doctor in Abu Dhabi suggested that we get rid of all forms of sugar and sugary sweets. In addition to that, she asked us to stop eating RICE, BREAD, PASTA, ANY KIND OF GRAIN, ANYTHING WITH FLOUR, POTATOES and other ROOTCROPS. I know from that point that it will be a tough challenge for both of us, however, I feel that both have the courage to do something to reverse what was diagnosed.

Dr June gave us a leaflet that details the food that we can eat. She also asked us not to break our heads on understanding the ratios stated in pages 2 to 3 and eat whatever falls on the 'allowed food'. We did what was told to eat and slowly did some reading on the title of the diet: KETOGENIC --- curiosity just hit me.

This is what my manager told me about 'eat fat to reverse diabetes'. So that was what is ketogenic, maybe...

Then my former CVG batchmate saw my FB posts with hashtag #tryingketo and added me in a group called "Ketogenic Success" and "Ketovangelist Kitchen". This is where I read a lot of articles about keto. Everything is strange: from why milk is not allowed when cream is totally acceptable. Or why pork rinds is allowed and why chicken legs are preffered over the chicken breast.

We didn't do it overnight. Ours was a slow progress with the hope of feeling better than our current 'usual'. We even had some sugar free ice cream from Baskin Robbins and dark chocolates from Patchi. Both were ditched off our 'kinda cheats' after two weeks.

We decided to get this blog to document what we'll go through: especially in UAE where Keto is still "what? Keto what?" and where non-fat foods are still the popular one. We might be vocal of our cheats but would let you know what we felt after... or what forced us or made us decide to cheat for them. Or just scribble down what we wanted to say, or what we think --- be it a keto or a non-keto topic.

We don't promise anything but true and sincere opinions from the two of us. You might read me or maybe Dan in a frequency of we don't know yet.

My parents are also diabetics and we filipinos can not survive without rice and so my parents have adopted into eating brown rice rather than white rice :)

Hi @asbonclz we are prone in #diabetes as our staple food is mostly carbohydrates. Keto diet is known to reverse type2 diabetes.
