A few years ago, I decided to go to a nearby State Park. The plan was to walk a trail and then cool off in a lake. My plans took a literal turn for the worse when I managed to end up on a longer trail. I did not panic and realized that all I had to do was use landmarks and points of interest I has passed to get back on my intended course. The only real effects of my minor ordeal were some sore muscles and blistered feet.
Since I can't venture as far as I have in the past due to me wanting a car, I'm looking at day trips. One of which is to that State Park or another one. I'm trying to avoid getting lost and am almost done with relevant chapters of a book on how to use a map and compass to navigate.
Reading through the book has me thinking that the ability to use a compass and map may be a useful tool for #theresistance. For one, I could eventually see a sort of new underground railroad being needed. It may be for refugees trying to reach "sanctuary cities" or women getting to states like New York as part of a real-life #maidez.
But the ability to take headings may also be useful in an urban setting. Phones can be tracked, and during "unrest" service to parts of a city could be cut off. An activist familiar with using a compass could be a useful part of any resistance cell.
There might also be ways to do education and outreach. A sort of "Urban Orienteering" could be taught, where folks are given a map of a city and must use a compass to reach buildings.
