Participants were first examined in 1994-96, weight and other measurements were recorded and they answered a questionnaire. They also gave blood samples stored in liquid nitrogen.

Scientists used 20-year blood samples and other appropriate data from 400 women who were healthy when they were first examined, but predicted to have breast cancer within 2 to 7 years after delivering their first samples, and 400 other women without breast cancer.

This method was also used to test different data sets of women examined in 1997. Estimates based on the new data set matched the initial data, indicating the validity of the model.
