Blood Camp Analysis

The organization of blood donation camp should be best and safe to the patient/recipients and to the blood donor also. With increase in population and development of more advanced medical and surgical procedures, the need for blood is ever increasing. Only voluntary blood donors can help to maintain an adequate supply of blood to save the lives of those who are in need. They are the source of safe blood also.

SURVEY

A blood donation camp was organized today 29 Nov,2017 in Punjab College Shalimar Campus, Lahore. It was held in the college hall. All the preparations such as arrangement of beds, sanitation etc. were made. A team of doctors and nurses from the Sundas Foundation had reached in time. Students of College participated in the camp. At first, the willing donors were asked to get their weight measured. After the confirmation at the first step, either the donor is eligible for the blood donation, he was further examined by a doctor. The doctor checked his eyes & physical health to determine, either he's eligible for blood donation or not. After the checkup, the willing donor were asked to lie on bed. The doctor/nurse syringed him with needle, that was attached to the blood bag. With the through confirm, the donor was syringed. This process took more than fifteen minutes. After that, donors were given a pack of juice. Major Tariq was spreading awareness one by one in every class regarding Blood Donation, He told the students that the donated blood would be used for saving the lives of the Thalassemia, Hemophilia and Cancer patients.

CORE ISSUES IN EXISTING SYSTEM:
• Malfunction weighing machine.
• Unaware Donors.
• Multiple donors on a single bed.
• No checkup during blood donation.
• Doctors/Nurses did not used gloves.
• No checkup (blood pressure, pulse rate).
• No Hemocue/Hemoglobin test.
• Dirty Environment.
• No Proper Disposing of Waste Material.
• No Proper way of shaking blood.
• No Medicine Available in Case of Emergency.
• No Use Sphygmomanometer.
• No Use Stethoscope.
• No proper task division between Doctors/Nurses.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS:

  1. List of staff attending the camp (Medical officer, Lab technicians, nursing staff).

  2. List of equipment to be carried to camp.
    • Sphygmomanometer
    • Stethoscope
    • Blood mixer machine
    • Tube sealer
    • Weighing machine
    • Blood collecting monitor
    • Hemocue/Hemoglobinometer
    • Artery forceps, scissors, tongue depressor, kidney trays
    • Bins for collecting infectious and non-infectious waste materials
    • Gloves
    • Blood Storage Box

  3. List of consumables to be carried along with:
    • Disposables lancets
    • Antiseptic solution
    • Glass slides, glass beakers, Pasteur pipettes
    • Sodium hypochlorite solutions
    • Emergency medicines
    • Dry ice or coolant

  4. The Task Should be Divided between Nurse/Doctors like Donor’s Registration, Hemoglobin test and taking donor’s Blood.

  5. The Blood should be Kept in 2 to 6-degree Temperature. This low
temperature does slow down the metabolism and prevent bacterial multiplication and blood clotting.

  6. The Donor’s hemoglobin level is tested to make sure that the loss
of blood will not make them anemic, and this check is the common reasons that a donor is ineligible, Pulse, Blood Pressure and body temperature also evaluated.

  7. Needle lancet and syringes should be destroyed with the needle cutter.

  8. All the discarded blood bag tubing and needles must be segregated
separately for disposal as per bio-safety protocol and waste management. They should never be left unattended.
