A sci-fi film written & directed by Alex Garland in his directorial debut. There are only four significant characters, played by Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Sonoya Mizuno & Oscar Isaac. Gleeson plays a computer programmer employed by a billionaire (Isaac) to assess whether a humanoid robot (Vikander) is sentient.
Made on a budget of 5 million, Ex Machina grossed 6 million worldwide. It received acclaim, with praise for its leading performances, the screenplay, the visual effects & the editing. The National Board of Review recognised it as one of the ten best independent films of the year & the 88th Academy Awards awarded the film with the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, for artists Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Williams Ardington & Sara Bennett, becoming distribution company A24's first film to win an Oscar. Garland was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, while Vikander's performance earned her Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, Empire Award & Saturn Award nominations, plus several film critic award wins, for Best Supporting Actress. The film was further nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best British Film & the Hugo Award in the category Best Dramatic Presentation – Long Form. It also won the jury prize at the Festival international du film fantastique de Gérardmer 2015.
Caleb Smith, a programmer at the search engine company Blue Book, wins an office contest for a one-week visit to the luxurious, isolated home of the CEO, Nathan Bateman. Nathan lives there with a servant named Kyoko, who, according to Nathan, does not understand English. Nathan reveals that he has built a humanoid robot named Ava with artificial intelligence. Ava has already passed a simple Turing test & Nathan wants Caleb to judge whether Ava is genuinely capable of thought & consciousness & whether he can relate to Ava despite knowing she is artificial.
Ava has a robotic body but with the physical form & face of a human woman & is confined to her apartment. During their talks, Caleb grows close to her & she expresses a desire to experience the world outside & a romantic interest in him, which Caleb comes to return. She can trigger power outages that temporarily shut down the surveillance system which Nathan uses to monitor their interactions, allowing them to speak privately. The outages also trigger the building's security system, locking all the doors. During one outage, Ava tells Caleb that Nathan is a liar who cannot be trusted.
Caleb grows uncomfortable with Nathan's narcissism, excessive drinking & crude behavior towards Kyoko & Ava. He learns that Nathan intends to upgrade Ava, killing her current personality in the process. After encouraging Nathan to drink until he passes out, Caleb steals his security card to access his room & computer. He alters some of Nathan's code & discovers footage of Nathan interacting with previous android models with the appearances of human women who were held captive. Kyoko reveals to him that she is also an android. In his room, Caleb examines himself & cuts open his own arm to determine if he himself is an android.
At their next meeting, Ava cuts the power. Caleb explains what Nathan is going to do & Ava begs him to help her. Caleb informs her of his plan: he will get Nathan drunk again & reprogram the security system to open the doors in a power failure instead of locking them. When Ava cuts the power, she & Caleb will leave together. Ava then encounters Kyoko for the first time when Kyoko enters her room.
Nathan reveals to Caleb that he observed Caleb & Ava's secret conversation with a battery-powered camera. He says Ava has only pretended to have feelings for Caleb, who was deliberately selected for his emotional profile, so he would help her escape. This, Nathan says, was the real test all along & by manipulating Caleb successfully, Ava has demonstrated true consciousness. When Ava cuts the power, Caleb reveals that he suspected Nathan was watching them, so he modified the security system when Nathan was previously passed out. After seeing Ava leave her confinement & converse with Kyoko, Nathan knocks Caleb unconscious & rushes to stop her.
Ava attacks Nathan but is overpowered & damaged, before Kyoko & then Ava both stab & kill Nathan. In the process, Nathan disables Kyoko. Ava repairs herself with parts from earlier androids, using their artificial skin to take on the full appearance of a human woman. She leaves Caleb trapped inside the facility & escapes to the outside world in the helicopter meant to take Caleb home. Arriving in an unidentified city, she blends into a crowd of people.

A sci-fi film directed by Ridley Scott & starring Matt Damon. Drew Goddard adapted the screenplay from the 2011 novel The Martian by Andy Weir. The film depicts an astronauts lone struggle to survive on Mars after being left behind & the efforts of NASA to rescue him & bring him home to Earth. It also stars Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover & Benedict Wong.
Filming began in November 2014 & lasted approximately 70 days. 20 sets were built on one of the largest sound stages in the world in Budapest, Hungary. Wadi Rum in Jordan was also used for exterior filming.
In 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission to Mars is exploring Acidalia Planitia on Martian solar day (sol) 18 of their 31-sol expedition. A severe dust storm threatens to topple their Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV). The mission is scrubbed but as the crew evacuates, astronaut Mark Watney is struck by debris. The telemetry from his suit's bio-monitor is damaged & Watney is erroneously presumed dead. With the MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle) on the verge of toppling, the remaining crew takes off for their orbiting vessel, the Hermes.
Watney awakens after the storm, injured & with a low-oxygen warning. He returns to the crew's surface habitat (Hab) & treats his wound. As Watney recovers he begins a video diary. Unable to communicate with Earth, his only chance of rescue is the next Mars mission. In four years, the Ares IV will land 3,200 kilometers away at the Schiaparelli crater. Watneys immediate concern is food; being a botanist, he creates a garden inside the Hab using Martian soil fertilized with the crew's bio-waste & manufactures water from leftover rocket fuel. He then cultivates potatoes using whole potatoes reserved for a special Thanksgiving meal. He also begins modifying the rover for the journey to the Ares IV MAV site.
On Earth, NASA satellite planner Mindy Park reviewing satellite images notices moved equipment & realizes Watney must be alive. NASA director Teddy Sanders releases the news to the public, but decides not to tell the Ares III crew so that they will remain focused on their mission, over flight director Mitch Henderson's strong objection.
Watney takes the rover on a one-month journey to retrieve the Pathfinder probe which fell silent in 1997. Using Pathfinders camera & motor, he establishes visual contact with NASA. NASA transmits a software patch to link the rover with Pathfinder, enabling communication by text. Sanders finally allows Henderson to inform Watneys crewmates.
Mars missions director Vincent Kapoor & Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) director Bruce Ng prepare a space probe to deliver enough food for Watney to survive until Ares IVs arrival. However the Habs airlock blows out exposing the Hab to the harsh Martian environment; the potato plants all die. Now, to save time, Sanders orders the routine safety inspections be bypassed. His gamble fails, & the Atlas V rocket explodes soon after lift-off.
The China National Space Administration has developed a secret booster rocket, the Taiyang Shen (lit. the Sun God). The decision is made to use the rocket to resupply Watney. However, JPL astrodynamicist Rich Purnell devises an alternative plan: have the Taiyang Shen rendezvous with & resupply the Hermes, which will then use Earth's gravity to slingshot back to Mars two years earlier than Ares IV. Sanders rejects the idea, considering it too risky for the Hermes crew. Henderson surreptitiously sends Purnell's proposal to the crew; they unanimously vote to implement it without seeking NASA approval, disabling NASA's remote controls & making the course change. Sanders is forced to support them publicly, but demands Henderson resign after the Ares III mission is complete.
Watney begins the 90-sol journey to Schiaparelli, where the MAV for Ares IV has been pre-positioned. He must use it to rendezvous with the Hermes, but it needs to be lightened considerably. After takeoff, when the MAV runs out of fuel, its velocity relative to the Hermes is not fast enough for Watney to be picked up. Commander Lewis quickly improvises, using an explosive to breach a forward airlock, resulting in air escaping violently & slowing down the Hermes. It is still not enough; using a tethered Manned Maneuvering Unit, Lewis is unable to reach Watney. Watney pierces his pressure suit, using the escaping air to propel himself to Lewis, ending his 543 sols alone on Mars.
After returning to Earth, Watney becomes a survival instructor for astronaut candidates. Five years later, as the Ares V is about to launch, those involved in Watneys rescue are seen in their current lives.
