#FITGIRL; a pretty popular statement nowadays and part of the subject of this blog. But why is it so popular? Actually, it is not that weird. Trends come and go, such as this one. The social influencers of the moment have changed into the girls who are young, fit and standing in the beginning of their active lives. Who are old enough to make their own choices and earn their own money. Yet are also dealing with a little rebel inside terrorizing their minds and using the money well earned on late nights dancing. Who are posting their fitness selfies so actively on social media you’re currently thinking about how good you would look in cute yoga pants (and believe me, you do would look good in a yoga pants.) These girls are making changes in the utopia formally known as the gym. The time of women only using the treadmill has passed, they are challenging themselves and are entering the habitat of the strong macho males; by picking up the weights and showing those puffy gym dudes how it needs to be done. These women are mostly between the age of 16 and 35. They eat very healthy and are treating themselves once in a while with a cheatday. However, are the same women not exaggerating the fact that you have to look good instead of feeling good?
Diving in the body image ideal much too deep
As usual with trends involving social influencers, there is always a group who ruins it for the rest who mean well. This special group of fitgirls contains girls who are posting pictures of their half-naked bodies every day. Girls who are skipping a party because of the possible temptation of bad and unhealthy consummations. Girls who are beginning to get afraid of living their lives to the fullest and are actually destroying their bodies by “taking care of it”. Starving themselves with unhealthy diets, taking whatever chemicals their food supplements contain; hoping their body will look as strong and as fit as they have in their minds. Good but not good enough. And then wondering why their bodies are resisting this lifestyle. These girls are even starting to body shame everyone who doesn’t fit their fit image. This results in other women despising the term fitgirls and refusing to join the yet very enriching movement.
It has always been an issue; girls who want to fit an impossible body image only now the means have changed. Although this will be a reoccurring event it shouldn’t mean other girls should let them be influenced by it, in what way so ever. Because there are too many positive sides on being an actual fitgirl.
Boosting confidence
What being a real fitgirl actually does to you is boosting your confidence. I use the term “real fitgirl” because, in my opinion, a real fitgirl is a woman who cares about their health and body and sets a goal for them to become stronger. Strong is the new skinny! And it comes with all kinds of awesome features.
We know that too many selfies are never a good sign. On the other hand making some of those selfies might actually help you reaching your goal. This way a fitgirl has more depth in how much her body is changing. Standing on a scale nowadays is inapplicable. When training and while losing fat, you are also gaining muscles. Which results in weighing more or even the same as before you lost the fat. Because of the selfies you take, you can see much more result of your progress than when you are looking constantly in a mirror for example.
Next to seeing the actual progress, the results, when you post a picture of your progress, helps too. Gaining likes about your body and the work you’ve have done, how awesome is that? It’s okay to show a bit off, you’ve worked for it. You deserve it! Just don’t do it every day because then people might think of you as a braggart.😉
Do whatever the hell you want
Still, I can’t tell you what to do, neither can somebody else. The only one you should listen to is yourself. If you like making a lot of selfies because you look damn fine in that yoga pants, do it! And do it with confidence and attitude. No one should tell you or somebody else how to feel, dress or behave. I get the comment “don’t get too many muscles because that’s not very feminine” a lot. I can be as strong and as fit as I want and if somebody else doesn’t like that, then they can kiss my squatting ass. As I said earlier, in my opinion, a fitgirl is a woman who cares about their health and body and sets a goal for them to become stronger. So make yourself a goal, work for it and reach it! Anyone can do it. Fitgirls are women from all shapes and sizes. Make your own (healthy) body image. Do it for you and not for anyone else. Only then you will be a real fitgirl.
