What is a Bonsai?

Photo with courtesy of Mr. Alex Tan

Bonsai in a layman term is a small plant that imitates a big tree but reduced its size by many times Too many people, a Bonsai is a finished product of a tree in a miniature form that has gone through a long period of growth in a confined space either in a special flat pots or decorative jar. And sometimes you can see Bonsai plant is grown on the rock too.

What really is a Bonsai? Bonsai is a Japanese pronunciation of a Chinese name called penzai ( 盆栽 ). It is a technique to tray planting and is a Japanese art of cultivation technique to produce a small plant that simulates the size and shape of a grown-up tree. The reason for doing so is obvious. You don't need to go far to a forest or countryside to see and appreciate a tree of certain unique size and shape.

More description of Bonsai can be found in Wikipedia

On the left, Alex bought the Juniper plant of about RM50 which is planted in on a plastic bag. since it is a normal plant to be cultivated for a Bonsai. On the right is a finished cut and trimmed into desired size and shape. The training tool includes a wire to bind the small branch into the shape you want

Many years ago, I used to play with small Bonsai plant for about 2-3 years before I get involved with other matter. Based on my past experience, you can cultivate your own Bonsai plant to suit your own liking. To cultivate a bonsai plant, the basic requirement is looking for a suitable type of plant, and learn the technique to train the tree into the shape you desired.

Briefly, there are several considerations when you want to cultivate a Bonsai plant. Below is a list of essentials:-

  • Type of tree
  • Type of pot
  • Soil
  • Training Tools

These two images are another sample of cultivating a normal Juniper Plant into a ready to go Bonsai. The size and shape of these two set of examples largely depend on your imagination and creativity of the finished Bonsai which is crucial when you first train the plant.

If you take Bonsai as an Art, then you train the raw plant according to your imagination. To allow you to witness several cultivated Bonsai, my friend has to send me the photos of others Specially cultivated Bonsai on small pots.

I am glad you drooped by my post. These pictures of Bonsai were sent by my friend who likes to share but not capable of posting in any media. So, I have asked for his permission to post them here.
He was so nice to take the pictures purposely for me.

He even adjusts the photo taking technique after I showed him the flower contest winning post like yours. He is a nice man, I hardly know him. We were in the Bonsai Whatsapp group.
