Cleavage the true meaning - When did the transition start from the stones to the boobs?

No no no, this is not about boobs :P ONLY 

This is about the true meaning of the word Cleavage.

Consider the English word cleavage. The most mischievous have already established an immediate association between that word and a generous holy neckline, if not, Google deals with that.

Cleavage means little shame everywhere except perhaps in a room full of geologists. There, cleavage may have the original meaning: it is the name used in Geology to describe how a rock or a crystal fall apart.

Geology is a true science.  She provides us the knowledge we have about the age of the Earth and the movement of tectonic plates, for example, but about cleavage, the geologists have been completely outdated.

When did the transition start from the stones to the boobs?

It began with an English film of 1945 " The Wicked Lady" and a decision of an American responsible for ensuring the decorum in the cinemas.                                                                                                                                                        

A British film studio - Gainsborough Pictures - had been producing a series of visually hot films since the early 1940s. Some people were very interested in repeating the British success in the USA, but the generous bodices caused a lot of uneasiness. 

Whoever was in charge of managing the film censorship system and choosing what was acceptable to show on the screen was an organization called Motion Picture Production Code Administration, founded in 1930.

In 1945, this organization changed to a name that is now well known: Motion Picture Association of America, acronym MPAA, whose main function is to classify the films by age group - this when it is not entertained to hunt pirates or to participate in subversive actions destined to Control the Web.

When the movies arrived in the USA, the MPAA demanded that it could only be shown with a few changes. No one dared to describe the nature of the problem concretely, and so they resorted to a geological term: the poor cleavage of geologists.

  So, dear gentlemen, what you were talking about was a mere depression, a crevice, a groove there, an obscure line dividing the breast of an actress into two distinct sections.

If the MPAA censors were better acquainted with the customs of the Europeans, they would not have needed to undo them to Geology, they could have evoked the French term décolletage, in use until at least the end of World War II, and which came from "décolleté", low-browed.

But that was not the way it happened. 

So...young candidates for geologists, do not despair of usurpation of the word: friends die of envy of your back pains, desirous to know if the movement of tectonic plates is as sexy as it seems :P
