Life in the fast lane

Surely make you lose your mind. Canmore life is pretty slow actually. I work one of the easiest jobs I've ever had for the most amount of money I've ever made. Moving back to Ottawa will be a bit of a shock. Working in a city where its more eat or be eaten (though barely even that) than the rich vacation town of Canmore where there's money to burn is quite the distinction. There's something lost when you're not being challenged. The French would probably applaud the type of lifestyle in Canmore as part of their laissez-faire philosophy but not me.

Even though I grew up spoiled, and didn't even realize it till my wife came along, I still yearned for adversity. I purposely, subconsciously, create self-destructions and challenges that wouldn't exist if I didn't will them into existence. I think we all want to grow and if we stay stagnant for too long we start to become depressed. Our mind/body knows something is wrong and puts us into a state of hyper critical thought, in order to try to grasp our new paradigm. I think this is where psychedelics can come to the benefit of these types of people looking for a new direction, a new perspective. I myself am too afraid at this moment to try anything like that but it's nice to hear stories of it working for others in similar situations.

I'm going to try and get in the habit of carrying a small notebook around to jot my thoughts down. The good ones are always fleeting. I could use my phone but something about the movement of the hand and the tactile feeling is meaningful and powerful.

I missed a day of writing due to a long day of travel and exhaustion but tonight I made sure to not lose all sight of my goal. My ultimate vision and my sense of why. To catalog my thoughts, ideas, and passions in a structured and disciplined manner while also sharing them with the world to keep me accountable.

The book I'm reading right now is called Start With Why. The main idea is that many successful businesses (this can also be used to refer to people) have a raison d'etre that transcends the what and the how. The book uses Apple Inc. as a good example of this hypothesis. Having a clearly defined why (reason to exist) over just making computers and other consumer electronics creates a culture that others can emotionally invest and believe in rather than only being a consumer. Apple's cult like following can be attributed more to their philosophy than the products they create and this can be transferred to humans as well. The book plays as a bit of a marketing manual in some ways but I think anyone could get something out of it. It has a hint of self-help that gets you thinking about the reasons you get up in the morning. It definitely got me thinking. There are only so many books you can read that tell you to follow your dreams till you actually start doing it.
