Synopsis
Monsters come in many forms, and not everyone knows a monster when they see one. After three hundred years of monstrous, feral elves plaguing the island nation of Selkirk, everyone believes they know what a monster is. Humans have learned to live with their savage neighbors, enacting a Clearing every four years to push the elves back from their borders. The system has worked for centuries, until after one such purge, a babe was found in the forest.
As Tallis grows, she discovers she isn’t like everyone else. There is something a little different that makes people leery in her presence, and she only ever makes a handful of friends.
But when the elves gather their forces and emerge from the forests literally hissing Tallis’s name like a battle mantra, making friends is the least of her troubles. Tallis and her companions find themselves on an unwilling journey to not only clear her name, but to stop the elves from ravaging her homeland.

Review
- SPOILER ALERT * SPOILER ALERT * SPOILER ALERT *
I received an eBook copy directly from the author in exchange for an honest review.
“Tallis is a beautiful and terrible thing. Fearsome and alluring. Just like the forest in many ways... but it's written all over that handsome, pale face of yours; you like her.”
I have always enjoyed coming across new authors and I am so pleased I've had the chance to read some of C. E. Clayton's work.
Tallis was found as a baby, in clearing in the woods after a battle, and has always been a little different, never fitting in, never being accepted; even shunned by her surrogate father, until nightmares become real and attack the city, hissing her name all the while.
As she tries to stay alive seeking the answers she needs, about who she is, what she is, a ragtag party assembles around her, each with their own reasons, their own answers to find.
This is a story about the coming of age and a budding romance, all wrapped in sweet layers of fantasy and intrigue, garnished with adventure.
C. E. adds a new twist to a classic Fantasy element creating something fresh and unique in a genre that easily becomes "same old, same old". Her writing is easy to read and the story flows effortlessly.
The characters are well written, especially Tallis and Tomas, and their growth is en pointe; there is so much to discover with these 2, and the other main players, too, that it is hard to imagine not wanting to read the rest of the series.
Perfect for every fantasy freak ever born!!!
If, like me, you need more of this, then keep an eye on this blog because I will be reviewing both books 2, The Heart Of The Forest, and 3, The Machines Of Theda in the near future.
As always, do let us know what your thoughts are on any of C. E.'s works and please don't forget to like and share. Until next time...
Keep smiling
