I usually post this every 2 months, but since July was an unusually good book month for me I decided to show you what I got.... Also, September is shaping up to be a good book month, as well.

July is the time of year that I take my annual leave from work - I get 3 weeks, but I take 2 only (so that I have enough days left when the company closes for Christmas break) - because the schools have the second longest break around this time and I get to spend time with my autistic nephew. I go visit him in Gordon's Bay for a few days, then he comes to me for the rest of the time.

USED / SECOND HAND BOOKS
Gordon's Bay

Here are the books I bought while I was in Gordon's Bay and surrounds - there are a number of lovely little used book stores and I always make sure to visit.

The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey

PicsArt_08-08-12.21.04.jpg

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

PicsArt_08-10-07.49.12.jpg

In the beginning they were a group of nine. Nine aliens who left their home planet of Lorien when it fell under attack by the evil Mogadorian. Nine aliens who scattered on Earth. Nine aliens who look like ordinary teenagers living ordinary lives, but who have extraordinary, paranormal skills. Nine aliens who might be sitting next to you now. The Nine had to separate and go into hiding.

The Mogadorian caught Number One in Malaysia, Number Two in England, and Number Three in Kenya. All of them were killed. John Smith, of Paradise, Ohio, is Number Four. He knows that he is next.

I AM NUMBER FOUR is the thrilling launch of a series about an exceptional group of teens as they struggle to outrun their past, discover their future—and live a normal life on Earth.

The Scions Of Shannara by Terry Brooks

PicsArt_08-12-01.19.17.jpg

Three hundres years have passed in the Four Lands. The Federation now controls all of the Southland. In the west, the Elves have vanished. In the east, the Dwarves are enslaved.

Par Ohmsford has retained some of the magical powers of his ancestors, although he does not fully understand the way they work. He is troubled by dreams of Allanon, the Druid whose fate has always seemed linked with that of the Ohmsfords. But when he is told of the Shadowen, the greatest danger ever to threaten the Four Lands, he embarks on a perilous quest - to meet the shade of Allanon and to carry his message to the other Scions of Shannara.

Fear by Michael Grant

PicsArt_08-11-12.05.50.jpg

It's been one year since all the adults disappeared. Gone.

Despite the hunger and the lies, even despite the plague, the kids of Perdido Beach are determined to survive. Creeping into the tenuous new world they've built, though, is perhaps the worst incarnation yet of the enemy known as the Darkness: fear.

Within the FAYZ, life breaks down while the Darkness takes over, literally—turning the dome-world of the FAYZ entirely black. In darkness, the worst fears of all emerge, and the cruelest of intentions are carried out. But even in their darkest moments, the inhabitants of the FAYZ maintain a will to survive and a desire to take care of the others in their ravaged band that endures, no matter what the cost.

Fear, Michael Grant's fifth book in the bestselling dystopian Gone series, will thrill readers . . . even as it terrifies them.

The Diabolic by S. J. Kincaid

Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator's daughter, Sidonia. There's no one Nemesis wouldn't kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.

She must become her.

Now one of the galaxy's most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she's been told she doesn't have - humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire...

My Local Bookstores

Of course, I can't leave my two favourite book stores out of the equation, now can I?

The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett

PicsArt_08-08-08.12.00.jpg

As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise—demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards—symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile.

It was not always this way.

Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Together, they will stand against the night.

A global war is racing.

You can't see it, but it's happening all around you.

Inside YOU.

And it changes everything.

Sadie McLure wants to find out who murdered her family. Noah Cotton needs to know what drove his brother insane. Their search for answers leads them into the astonishing world of the nano - and a battle more mind-blowing than anyone could have ever imagined.

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

Found another 2 books to add to my small, but growing, Tolkien collection. The Afrikaans one was a definite surprise for me since it was printed and bound right here in Cape Town last year.

SUBSCRIPTIONS, COMPETITIONS AND ARCS

The Colour Of Bee Larkham's Murder by Sarah J. Harris

I won this book in a competition run by @mustreadsa, in conjunction with Jonathan Ball Publishers. It seems to be some kind of promotional copy where you get to paint the cover anyway you like - came with some acrylic paints, as well.

PicsArt_08-11-12.04.59.jpg

Whatever happens, don’t tell anyone what you did to Bee Larkham…

Jasper is not ordinary. In fact, he would say he is extraordinary. Synaesthesia paints the sounds of his world in a kaleidoscope of colours that no one else can see. But on Friday, he discovered a new colour – the colour of murder.

He’s sure something has happened to his neighbour, Bee Larkham, but no-one else seems to be taking it as seriously as they should be. The knife and the screams are all mixed up in his head and he’s scared that he can’t quite remember anything clearly.

But where is Bee? Why hasn’t she come home yet? Jasper must uncover the truth about that night – including his own role in what happened…
