The Female Uprising and Conquering of the Tyrannical Monsters

A Letter from Abigail Adams to John Adams
March 31, 1776

Abigail Adams wrote a letter to her husband John on March 31, 1776. It is a short piece of text, in its entirety contains only seven sentences and two paragraphs. But, within this small piece of work written to a loved one is the passion of a woman fighting for the future of females and the humor dotted throughout in a half-joking manner for her husband to read. Abigail states in sporadically capitalized text that her husband must not forget about her and other women. She notes how men can be tyrannical creatures when left with too much power, and threatens the uprising of women that no law or man could contain.

This letter while it is brief, contains no shortage of feminism at its birth. Abigail starts off the letter with hoping to hear that her husband has won in his fight to “independency”. She then goes on to remind him not to forget the women when he is working for their freedom. She makes important matters to her known by stating them to her husband. Some words are capitalized throughout the text in the middle of sentence to give emphasis to them and how strongly she means what she is saying. Abigail talks about how women must have a say and not be less than a passing thought. She asks John to be different from their ancestors, for if the care and attention is not given the an uprising will ensue and no man nor god, no law could stop. She tells him “That your Sex are Naturally Tyrannical is a Truth so throughly established as to admit no dispute [...]”.

In a time when women had very little say in the politics that were abundance and practically suffocating Abigail Adams, the future First Lady of the United States of America, was going to make her voice heard. She tell her husband, the future president of the United States of America, that women must have a say on what is to come. The last paragraph or second paragraph says that men do not need to be these tyrannical monsters all of the time or “Masters” and could hold the more endearing title of “Friend” and equal. She goes to the Bible to say how the Female sex was created to be an equal and a companion for Man, not some sex object and maid.

Abigail Adams was many things in her life. She was a wife, a mother, a First Lady, a writer and dreamer of a bright future. She said what she thought and believed in without a second thought of who oppose or disapprove. She called men out and brought women up. There is something about her writing that makes you want to read it and not turn away, she had this harshness, compulsion, this formidably impressive behavior that emanated from her. She is in ever sense of the word a badass.
