Lysander Spooner, a very big hole in your fakeducation.

in books •  6 years ago

From Lysander's biography:

Lysander Spooner came from the flintly farmland of rural New England.
He was born January 19, 1808, on his father's farm near Athol, Massachusetts, the second child and second son in a family of six sons and three daughters.
Not a single word has survived from Lysander's hand about his father, Asa Spooner (1778-1851); the father evidently was of strong authority.
In the tradition of rural New England, he was, according to a family genealogist, “a man of great independence and individuality of character.”

His collected works.

The unconstitutional laws of the United Snakes prohibiting private mail.

An essay on trial by jury.

Perhaps you shouldn't bite off more than you can chew, or deal with the cognitive dissonance.
These are not light reading.

But if you want to free your mind from the mindwarp put on you by those that will kill you to control you, reading is the price you got to pay.

Any government, that is its own judge of, and determines authoritatively for the people, what
are its own powers over the people, is an absolute government of course. It has all the powers
that it chooses to exercise. There is no other --- or at least no more accurate --- definition of
a despotism than this.

I've only just begun, but this is very interesting reading.
And I am especially intrigued by this statement
it is not only the right and duty of juries to judge what are the facts, what is the law, and what was the
moral intent of the accused; but that it is also their right, and their primary and paramount
duty, to judge of the justice of the law, and to hold all laws invalid, that are, in their opinion,
unjust or oppressive, and all persons guiltless in violating, or resisting the execution of, such
laws.

Didn't see that on the civics class test, huh?
