Stephen King is known as a master of the macabre. Many movies in the horror movie genre are based on works by King, who has made a name for himself writing mostly chilling tales of terror. What many people don't know is that King has dozens of stories and books that he has written that aren't scary, some of which have gone on to become movies. Shawshank Redemption is the story of two prison inmates who form a bond behind prison walls and find a sense of redemption by performing common acts of decency for one another, as well as other inmates. What many may not know is that the story is based on a novella King wrote titled "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."

Stand by Me

Based on King's novella "The Body," Stand by Me is a coming of age story centered around a group of kids who set out to find the body of a missing child in hopes of becoming local heroes. Through their journey they find themselves falling into a number of misadventures that ultimately force them to learn new things about themselves and forge new bonds with the other members of the group.

The Green Mile

Based on King's novel series of the same name, The Green Mile centers around a character named John Coffey. Coffey is an inmate sentenced to death row for the rape and murder of two young girls. While at the prison it is learned that Coffey has miraculous healing powers, allowing a mouse to live well beyond its life span and able to heal others in the prison of various ailments. It is later learned that Coffey had not committed the crime he was charged with but instead of fighting the conviction, Coffey choses to be executed anyway in order to escape the cruelty of the world.
