The Fine Art of Recommending Books

There's only one thing that excuses someone who reads too many books.

And here it is: you can forgive someone for reading too much, provided they never, ever recommend books to you.

Unfortunately, however, compulsive readers can't help but recommend books. If you ever encounter one of them, you'll find this to be true. It's a universal characteristic of the genus.

(The only more common features are as follows: introversion, nearsightedness, and a penchant for saying, "Well, as a writer, I think..." followed by pretty much any old thing.)

But the thing about compulsive readers is that they can't help but recommend books. It's part of their disease.

It's what they know. It's what they live for. It's the reason they have shelves and shelves full of books they've never read.

So the compulsive reader has to find a way to recommend books without appearing to recommend them. Because the compulsive reader can't simply read and enjoy a book. No, these poor souls have to find somebody else who's read the book too, so they can get together and gush about how great it is.

So watch out. Some of them can get quite subtle in their technique. But now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
