H.P. Lovecraft is arguably the most significant figure in 20th century horror fiction. He was the first genre writer to have his work collected in the Library of America, and his works have inspired a number of films and countless literary imitations. Virtually unknown during his lifetime except to a small group of young admirers, Lovecraft's fame has steadily risen since his untimely death at the age of 46. The Haunter of the Dark was written in 1935 and originally published in Weird Tales magazine in 1936. It is the last-written of Lovecraft's known works. This is its first appearance in book form, published in London in 1951:
