Midnight At The Well Of Souls: A Brief Review

in books •  7 years ago

It's finally here!!! I've been a huge fan of science fiction for as long as I can remember and a fan of Jack Chalker since the early 80's (1980-81). This is volume one of the Well of Souls series and a little hard to find. Amazon had it for around $29.95, but I picked it up used at ThriftBooks.com for $3.45.

Chalker's stories are deep- they remind me of C.S. Lewis' space trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength)- and can be confusing, but they're well worth the read for any sci-fi and fantasy fan. The Well World is comprised of two hemispheres- here's a map of the Northern...

As you can see the planet is set up like a honeycomb with each culture possessing varying levels of technology. The creatures that inhabit each hexagon are different and our hero, Nathan Brazil has to change form to travel between them. Brazil himself is an interesting character- the antithesis of the typical Buck Rogers/Captain Kirk type. He's a short Jewish guy with kinky black hair and a big nose. I'm not going to do a spoiler and give away any more of the story, but if you love sci-fi and/or fantasy stories, you'll love the Well of Souls series and will be missing out on what should be a classic up there with Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein and the rest!

Well, I'm off to have coffee and spend the rest of the afternoon getting reacquainted with Nathan, et.al..

I read this on my phone/Kindle a while back and couldn't get the image of the plant people out of my head! Chalker did such a good job of describing how they extended their roots into the soil each night... an image that stuck with me. @jimitations is a big fan of this series and is the one who shared it with me.

When I first read it in '80 I was working offshore on an oil rig and there's not much for recreation. I never enjoyed (or tried) sitting in a dark room with a bunch of guys watching porn. There's always a bunch of books and this was one... ever since, I've never been able to get enough of the guy. Fortunately he's as prolific as Stephen King, if you can find his stuff!

Enjoy it bud. Little pleasures...

Thanks Buddy... and thank you for your help, it means a lot!

You are more than welcome. I am indebted to you for the support you have shown me on steemit, so it a pleasure(Just a shame it came so close to rent week..) Folk like yourself inspire me to keep fighting the system and it's great to see an old dog like you sticking it to them.

As sci-fi fan always in search of something worth reading, thanks a lot!
Sounds interesting and you're a man to be trusted :)

I'm really excited, I've been trying to find these books but didn't want to pay $30 for a book that sold for $2.50. I stumbled across ThriftBooks by mistake looking for another book and found they have the whole series. I have no idea why this guy isn't more famous, I think he's one of the best. If you google the book there's probably a better review- thanks as always!

I enjoy a good fiction book as well. Have you ever heard of Brian Godawa. He has a series "Chronicles of the Nephilim". I just finished it. Great read!

I haven't but I'm always looking for something good. But first I have got to reread this series... I've been searching for it for several years!

I love science fiction books !! I never heard of this book I guess it’s time to hit amazon and order :D

Don't go to Amazon!!! Go to ThriftBooks.com!!!

Thank you for this post u have really learnt something

@richq11 Thanks for sharing. I´m new in sciencefiction. So i´m improving my knowledge about that.

Thanks for the concise and informative piece on one of my favorite science fiction books! Yes, it's a high price at this time, but indeed worth it I might add :)

I have been a fan of science fiction since the days of Star Trek. Not familiar with the book. The last book I read was a dated copy of 'The Illuminati.' Thanks @richq11
