“I think that sometimes almost the bigger tragedy in a weird way is all of the future imagined creative projects that could have happened that didn't. I feel the same way about lots of brilliant people who die young.” ― Chris Cornell

Reading through the pages of Infinite Jest one always wonders how much of the characters’ sadness is related to what David Foster Wallace was feeling at the time of writing the novel.

Was he feeling some great sadness like some of the protagonists? Was he too struggling with some addiction? Or maybe he felt that he was misunderstood like some of the characters… Perhaps we will never have the answers to these questions but regardless, we can at least appreciate this well-crafted piece of art that he left us with.

Death by Entertainment

Infinite Jest takes place in different timelines, this chapter in particular transpires in a fictional futuristic era where entertainment has become the chore element around the which most of society has based its entire existence.

Wallace goes to great lengths to caricaturize the degree to which the need for entertainment has become a necessity, so much so that you at times you feel like being stuck inside Nirvana’s timeless Smells Like Teen Spirit song,

What’s spectacular about the whole thing is the way DFW creates a story with so many shifts in momentum that one second he has you worrying about the future, or empathizing with a certain character and then all of the sudden he has you bursting in laughter at a totally unexpected scene that took you by surprise.

Ridiculous scenes, like the man who was found dead in his couch and the cause of death is too much entertainment.

That’s basically the main theme in chapter eleven where our protagonists are met with a dilemma, the right to choose, or the right to be entertained.

Which one will they chose?

“I have always been willing to put myself at great personal risk for the sake of entertainment.” ― George Carlin

I don't get It much, Maybe I am missing a few of your previous posts, but seems interesting, will keep up with you in your next posts to seek better understanding of your posts.

element around the which most of society has based its entire existence.
Maybe you are missing something after the in this line.

Thanks looftee! Actually these all summeries of a famous novel.. This in particular of chapter 11, but it's an amazing book, you'll love it I think :)

Which book is it?
I loved the lines, I will definitely love to read the book.

It's Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace. Hope you like it, it's a tough book though. :)

I will write it down and will read it whenever I will be looking for a new book.

This book is an adventure that's for sure.

That's great.

nice....upvote and resteem for your post...

Thanks a lot!

u r welcome...

Even though I still can't read all the way through these posts for reasons of spoilers (I did finally get the book, but I'm a bit far behind at this point ;) Wanted to say hello, - love that you used a Chris Cornell quote. As soon as you know what the next book is going to be for the club, let me know, I definitely want in on it :)

Yeah we have a general idea of the next book, not decided yet though, I will let you know for sure.

We're 45-50% in this one already.

Thank you for stopping by and saying hello :)

I hope all is well in your life!

Life has been busy. Nice weather has me running the kids many more places and we had a recent scare with my dad so I've been spending a great deal of time with my parents (no worries, he's doing much better! ) My commenting time on steemit has definitely lagged, but I'm starting to catch up.
How are you doing? I admit, I miss seeing many more of your awesome posts, I'm guessing your life must be busy too :)

It's really descriptive of where society is going. Entertainment is literally killing people.
I wonder why Chris chose to end his life. Was his depression tied to entertainment? Yet music was his life... Guess we'll never know that either.
Up and resteemed!

Yeah I wish to know as well, I think at this point none of us know anything, I'm sorry it had to come to this, too many brilliant people leave to soon.

Thank you by the way!!

welcome :)

It is a pity that our environment can make us sick.

Yeah for sure.

Hi, I've seen some of your publications I'm going to follow, follow me and let's collaborate together =)

Thank you!

Shame my ear is fucked up currently and I can’t listen to the records. But speaking about projects. Let me tell you I feel bad for promoting it all over the place but it needs it :P. I have open the registration for the DnD like game for Steemit I’ve been working on and I’m seeking all the storytelling enthusiasts. I would be honoured if you joined :).
