most expensive neighborhoods to buy a house in Boston

You’ve probably heard that Boston was an expensive place to buy real estate, but how expensive is it really? That largely depends on where you look and what type of listings you look at. There are still plenty of neighborhoods in Beantown where you can find condo listings under $400K and even single family Boston homes for sale under $500K, but not in these neighborhoods. These areas are ‘Elon Musk holding a flamethrower’ expensive.

Without further hype, I present the most expensive neighborhoods to buy a home in Boston. All Boston real estate data was provided by Boston Pads.

Back Bay - $5.85M Median Single Family Home Price

The undisputed, uncontested most expensive neighborhood to buy a home in Boston is Back Bay. At $5.85M median sales price for single family and $5.66M for multi family, it outweighs its nearest competitor by over $1M and $2M in each respective category. Back Bay’s $1.8M median condo price is second to only Seaport ($1.88M), and its $1,300 average price per square foot is the most in Boston. If you’re looking for homes for sale in Back Bay, prepare to see some gorgeous brownstones and some outrageous price tags.

Beacon Hill - $4.70M Median Single Family Home Price

Speaking of gorgeous brownstones, nearby Beacon Hill has some of the best to offer in Boston. The median price for single family homes for sale in Beacon Hill is $4.7M, while a multi-family home sells for a median price of $3.5M. It ranks second most expensive in both categories out of all Metro Boston. It also holds the second highest cost per square foot at $1,232 per foot.

South End - $3.46M Median Single Family Home Price

This is another historic Boston neighborhood full of the classic Victorian architecture. Homes for sale in South End have the 3rd highest median price at $3.46M. It also ranks 3rd highest for multifamily median home prices ($3.21M). Its cost per square foot of $1,055 ranks 4th highest out of all Boston Metro neighborhoods.

Brookline - $2.24M Median Single Family Home Price

Though technically outside of Boston’s city limits, Brookline is as much a part of Boston as the New England Patriots. It’s also considered one of Boston’s most affluent neighborhoods, and the real estate prices fit the bill. The median sales price for single family homes for sale in Brookline MA is $2.24M, the 4th highest in Boston. The multi family median sales price of $1.93M in Brookline ranks it 5th behind the North End.
