Botox FAQs
What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin (trade name Botox, Azzalure, Bocouture) is a powerful neurotoxin, which when injected into specific muscles, it temporarily blocks the nerve signals to that muscle & reduces movement. Today botulinum toxin has many uses within medicine & anti-aging including the treatment of muscle spasms, excessive sweating & in facial muscles to reduce the appearance & onset of lines and wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is a Prescription Only Medication (POM) & for your own safety, should only be administered by a suitable qualified medical professional.
Where can Botox be used?
Botox treatments are often used for the following areas: the forehead, in between the brows, crows feet, bunny lines, smoker’s lines, chin, brow lifting, underarms, jawline, gummy smile
How long does Botox take to work?
The effects of Botox can start to appear from the third day following injection into the specific muscles. It can take 7-14 days for the full reduction in muscle movement to occur, any reviews or additional treatment should not be carried out by your qualified medical practitioner before this in order to reduce the risk of over-treatment & complications. Botulinum toxin results will vary between individuals, it may take more than one treatment to gain the desired results in cases of severe movement, lines or wrinkles.
How long will Botox injections last?
The results from Botox treatments vary between individuals. On a cellular level, the toxin has completely disappeared from the muscles after 12 weeks. Movement in the muscles will slowly begin to return before this 12 week mark, once completely worn off you can expect all previous movement, lines and wrinkles to return. Repeat treatments are required to maintain reduced movement & over time any lines & wrinkles will become less severe due to the muscle shrinking. Environmental factors such as exercise & sun exposure may adversely affect the longevity of Botox treatments.
Do Botox Injections hurt?
Any injections can hurt, however this procedure involves small needles and is relatively painless. It is possible to apply local anaesthetic cream or a cold pack to slightly numb the area. There may be some discomfort once the anaesthetic cream wears off but this will soon pass.
What are the side-effects of Botox injections?
Potential Botox side effects include pain where the injection was made, infection, inflammation, swelling, redness, bleeding and bruising. It should be noted that some of these symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction; other allergy symptoms are itching, wheezing, asthma, a rash, dizziness and faintness. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any breathing issues or a faint or dizzy feeling. It is possible for the Botox to spread a little beyond the intended area and affect other tissues close by. For example, if you receive Botox treatments into the forehead close to your eyebrows or your upper eyelids, they could be affected and may droop temporarily. Our trained practitioners know the best areas to inject to avoid side-effects such as droopy eyelids.
